AFK gains are very useful for trekking as for whatever reason afk gains seem to apply to your double afk on some activities, trekking included, so if you spend 5 minutes afk with 500% afk gains doubling it instead of doubling to (5+5)*5 it for some reason does (5*5+5*5)*5 I think

so if you get enough from other sources you can blast through a lot of trekking stages
