the only reason for these masterclasses tbf is for the buffs they give to the actual players

WW gimmick is you kill Abominations and collect Medallions. Consider the Abominations as super tanky minibosses. You collect dust, upgrade the compass and obtain Tempest weapons, Rings and Stones to progress.

Mostly damage, but you'll eventually upgrade everything. Ties into WW talents that gives scaling stats the more you upgrade the compass.
