You really just need one char pushing, everyone else can be in lab. Once you get to w5, there’s a similar mechanic (divinity) you’ll want to leave everyone at. After a week or two there, you’ll unlock a god that will allow your chars to be active in both lab and divinity at once

In w3 there are not a lot of sources, having the merit and just ranking them up is really all you can do. There is a stamp, vial, salt lick, companion, and arcade but most are not easy when your just starting out.

Yes it works, you dont need the zen cogs can just get more exp ones. Build rate will only better once your dk reaches past the 2.5k levels mark and even then its a mix

Try not to cheese it with cards (unless you really must) and instead focus on some random sources. Bit by bit everything stacks to be huge.
