as long as each portal takes around 1 hour you can, you can active it if its less then 30 mins and you should get it quickly. if it takes more then 3-4 hours just afk and come back later no need to worry that much. you will be fine for the boss when you make it though

Just to add to what philosopher said, the real boost to armor comes from the armor stone upgrades, once you unlock new ones, just remake the armor with new stones

3️⃣ Egg capacity is limited and every time the hatchery fills up eggs are wasted until you unlock the rarity upgrade. Also helps you get two achievements with good rewards requiring egg capacity.
4️⃣ Allows you to connect to lab bonuses from slightly farther away which can reduce the number of characters needed in the lab. Note that the max distance between characters, which is called line width, doesn't increase.
5️⃣ Improves kills per hour in W4 but since you likely won't be pushing W4 portals for long this is relatively low priority.
6️⃣ Max level spice spillage triggers every time. They are lower priority since it takes a lot of star talent points and is likely to trigger several times in a row when checking multiple characters.
7️⃣ 3 crystal mobs per day is very little.
Unlocks the recipes for troll armor giving all stat% and the base for all further armor upgrades. It is great but require plenty of Nullo Salt. Don't buy it if you can't craft them.

So when you use them (with palette active) with no plants on the board it only spawns tier 1 plants, so make sure it's full first with low tier plants (use sprinkler and then chemical plant)
What I personally do is spam log minigame and when I have no more free retry I use chemical to reset it

But hoarding them doesn't really serve a use other than keeping one until you get a new low tier chemical to boost that one up so you can keep the cycle going

Also make sure to dig nuggets in between every chemical plant use
