put your guys on the Nooby Cogs section instead of the board when you can, and then they'll make cogs
the button at the top that says Tap Me if you cycle through by clicking it 3 times it'll show how much Exp bonus the cogs give
the cogs can give a bunch of stats and exp is actually the only good one so just max out exp cogs on the board at all times
eventually your Squires (make a second one as character #7 or #8) will outlevel everyone else by a boatload because of their talent that gives more construction exp and you wind up with a whole board of 2 squires and a bajillion exp cogs
also you can place Flags on 4 unrevealed tiles to work on revealing them. closer to middle = faster to flag

You put people in the lab to gain exp and use the mainframe to move their icons around to "link" them to bonuses or the jewels
If you have a certain God (Arctis I think?) then all your characters linked to that god count as being "in" the lab at all time to activate buffs and stuff
And there is another God (I think?) that makes it so if your chars are in the lab they are also on the divinity altar at the same time so you level up both in tandem
I could be wrong but someone will correct me I am sure lol
