Every quest you do from that guy unlocks the next critter you can trap. It’s best to cycle 20 min traps as the shiny chance is per trap claimed, not a % chance each critter you gain can be shiny

Silly question, my squire (lvl 6 trapping) doesn't seem to be getting trapping xp, I set the traps with my beastmaster via the drone, and claim them with the beastmaster skill, is there some quirk about the combination that doesn't give xp to the different characters?
