splice gun from claiming afk gives you a resource to upgrade levels but you lose the mats you can claim
if you neglect one or the other youll have a difficult time

Well if you're really wanting to free up space I would put all of your gold food in the backpack of one of your characters. I do that with my first one. Cuz you'll need them stacked big in w6. Plus gold food i never throw out. Throw out all red and purple upgrade stones. Use ones from w5 and when you get better percentage use the ones at w6. Put the hot cocoa on a mage inventory and same with the fishing orbs and the holly on archers you use their skills on. Even if you do not use those items you should have them in your food slot when taking samples cuz it does help
