Gear generally doesn't matter much. IMO your optimizations should be:

1. Push new worlds on your lead character as fast as possible. Be willing to candy it.
2. Unlock new characters ASAP. This basically means pushing your characters to the new world when it unlocks to grind XP, going back to skilling when you're too far from the next level breakpoint.
   Most of your damage is going to initially come from the Upgrade Vault, so even getting better weapons isn't that useful. However, getting enough accuracy can matter, so crafting gear to slot in upgrade stones may make sense
