The part you’re missing is that the cost of salts you need to rank up eventually caps at 1m. After that each rank up comes faster and faster. So your red salt will eventually rank up every few hours or even minutes. At that point you can choose to keep ranking it or just set it to auto.

I mean once you get to 1 mil salts on red then you wouldn't want orange to be using more than it creates. In the sense of red is your bottle neck so it doesn't matter how fast you can make blue or pink if your red can't keep up. This only applies if you want a system where you are always stockpiling all salts. If your fine with having to manually change them and then wait for the kne you need I guess maxing all wouldn't matter
