I think it's also based on which ones we're talking about. If people told you tacos dorados are authentic, then yes, they are, because that's a fried taco and an authentic Mexican dish. But I would agree the hard-shell taco as sold but not invented by Taco Bell is indeed not authentic Mexican cuisine as it seems to have its origin in.. some southern US state, not sure if it was CA or TX. It could even be that tacos dorados was the first thing that came to the US, and they created something out of it that wasn't tacos dorados, but rather just the hard shell taco we know today to imitate it. I'm not pessimistic enough about it to think Americans needed hard shell tacos as a way to Americanize it

Taco bell also didn't fail because of "hard shell tacos". Taco bell failed because something in such high supply as street tacos does not need a fast food chain. That would be like Panda Express opening in China, a horrible mistake when locally offered foods are so much better.
A food writer for Monterrey's El Norte newspaper summed it all up with the following: "What foolish gringos. They want to come by force to sell us tacos in Taco Land.
