If I were to try to simplify it then I'd use an example: You want a car to move from point a to point b in 5 seconds. You make a key frame at point a. Then you move to 5 seconds later on the timeline. You move the car to point b and set the second key frame. The computer will then smoothly move the car between those two points over the span of those 5 seconds when you play the animation.
