as someone who is trying to be respectful to trans people, how do i say sir/maam without it being rude if i guess wrong? i see many videos on tiktok about trans people complaining about the waiter getting it wrong, but i dont know any "safe" words to use other than only saying yes or no and ignoring the sir/maam

i wonder if using they/them if i dont know what pronouns they prefer is considered safe or not. maybe they dont like those pronouns so i dont know how to really talk with them unless they tell me their pronouns. in the case of them being transphobic and i accidently ask them something that made them angry like asking their pronouns, it doesnt feel safe to talk with anyone unless i know alot about them from a different source

regarding this msg, if someone accidently makes a mistake and guesses wrong, it just sucks because they would feel bad about not guessing correctly. they would have to watch what they say because they wouldnt know if the trans person would be forgiving or not. so always walking on eggshells is what cis people would have to do or take the risk and let the trans people get angry and hopefully they forgive them

So if someone misgenders me what I do is just correct them. I can usually tell if they made a mistake or if they are malicious. I’m always going to correct people so they know but it like doesn’t mean I’m mad if it wasn’t done on purpose. If someone was say trying to get my attention instead of sir or mam I would just prefer they say like excuse me or another phrase to get my attention.
