As far as I understand, free pets are untradeable but is there a way around that? Maybe an item or quest related to pets that I might have missed?

for the fish you can choose i believe, but legacy it was the first ever pet group so there was no choosing, so be careful with the commons from it cause once you get to highest treat in legacy you cant get commons anymore as 0% chance
