One big deal is upgrading the size of your board in regards to hitting mines, then you can afford to get more shields eventually, and theres things like the flag the reveals how many mines are next to it.

It will still be luck based in the end but it should get easier and easier as time goes

But optimizers is hand holding to the highest degree, aslong as you understand how to make it work for you, you just do what it says. A guide not too specific will focus more on a specific method or explain overall how something works, and that should be enough to then play by yourself.
