The problem with housing is that it's almost ALWAYS some kind of optional "for fun" thing. If it's not, it becomes a chore that may/may not be your cup of tea.
Terraria for example, I don't really care for it because it's kinda forced upon me (and I'm very utilitarian so aesthetics is not my strong suit; I've never been good at housing but I think it's fun and neat)
