So the story quests are solo, but it'll intertwine with forced multiplayer content like dungeons and "Trials" (basically you go in and it's just a boss, nothing else), though they're slowly adding NPC support to all the mandatory stuff if you really wanted to just play solo.
There's still plenty of multiplayer stuff to do outside of the main story quest ("MSQ"), and you can sort of do it with friends if you wanted. It's fun, but it'll take you awhile to get through the story.

• Beefy gives damage at the cost of DEF/ACC (neither of which is important)
• Pain gives MK at the same cost (useless if not MKing though)
• Fibers gives bonus Kill per Kill at the cost of damage, which is fine if you're not MKing anyway though. <== this one in particular would definitely help you push
• Zerg gives +AFK Gains at the cost of Carry Cap (unimportant), which would also boost your kills

At some point, you want everyone at 40+ though. At 40, you get TranQi style which gives FREE EXP AT ALL TIMES. This is what you use when not divving

10: Focus unlocks, but 100% ignore it.
15: Mantra unlocks; switch EVERYONE who is Divving to this. No points, but you get exp for every character.
25: Vitalic unlocks, this is just the current best for Div pts, but if EXPing, you want to keep Mantra going.
40: TranQi unlocks, this is what non-divvers use at all times for free EXP.
60/80: These are just strict upgrades to Vitalic, Divvers should use the highest one they have once all characters are 40+
