Yes, this is very typical. Up through Stormy North Island (lightning treasure), the sovereign odds are pretty bearable. Starting from Snow South (snowman treasure), the odds drop considerably (easy hundreds to tens of thousands times harder). You will need to get comfortable farming days/weeks on end at <0.05% find odds.

WARNING: Seeing 0.01% odds doesn't actually mean you are at 0.01% find chance. 0.01 is simply the lowest displayed odds whereas your actual odds might be much lower.

For a new player, which master class should they focus on first?

master classes is a bit of a rough patch until you get a lot of skill points, so i reccomend going with death bringer, wind walker, then arcanist for farming for afk fragments

once you got afk fragments you can put it off, as for unlocking i'd say wind walker is the easiest to unlock, death bringer is okay as long as you know what to do, whereas arcanist i found to be the hardest when i just got to world 6, when i worked on his talents a bit i was able to upgrade him
