the symbols have a % chance to upgrade a slot, after upgraded whichever charm placed within is increased (50% per upgrade so 1.5x on first 2.0x second 2.5x on third I believe it is), as note the chance you upgrade a slot gets lower the farther in your inventory it is, so ideally work from top left and go right
