Caverns in the Hole are unlocked based on time (by Opals placed on your Explorer) and typically don't require specific characters to do too much

normally when your chests fill up, each captain is able to "hold" an extra chest, with that talent it makes them upgrade the other chests, which ends up meaning less loot unless you dont claim for a looooong time

Without the talent, whenever your boats come in with loot they will go back and get a second loot that they will then hold on the ship, giving you double the amount of chest that you would normally get.

The rarity/tier of a captain simply determines the maximum roll of the stat(s) it has. Higher tier captains neither level faster nor scale more per level than any other captain. The strength of a captain at any given level is simply the captain's level multiplied by its base stat roll. If you want to compare a shop captain to one you have that is already leveled, simply divide its current stats by its level or use !IE/!IT to see the base stats.
