Yes, this is very typical. Up through Stormy North Island (lightning treasure), the sovereign odds are pretty bearable. Starting from Snow South (snowman treasure), the odds drop considerably (easy hundreds to tens of thousands times harder). You will need to get comfortable farming days/weeks on end at <0.05% find odds.

WARNING: Seeing 0.01% odds doesn't actually mean you are at 0.01% find chance. 0.01 is simply the lowest displayed odds whereas your actual odds might be much lower.

another reason 2 ES was meta over bubo was due to atom considerations. for most of the game, log prints are strong source of atoms due to log on logs. if you dont have doot, ES has most flexibility in ensuring 6x prints of oak to have highest atom generation for alchemy/atom collider bonuses.
with introduction of pocket divinity in hole (or if you had doot companion), the strength of 2 ES over 2 bubo has dropped considerably.
right now, as long as you ahve 1 ES and 1 bubo - you could delay on selecting your subclass until the last 2 master classes are released for w6. one is very likely to be the bubo upgrade so we'll see how much the meta might shake up as a result of the master class

Understand that DN count includes MK, KPK, and other multis which aren't accounted for when you go for loot. Loot is based on base kills so you have to factor all those out. Generally, a good comparison is to look at the number of Royal Urn drops you have. On average, most get it around 1K urns collected (or roughly 1B DN kills if you insist on using this count as a measure).
