Does the artifact find chance star sign have to be equipped always or just when opening chests?

I believe just when you interact with the map to spawn chests into the loot pile. However, in order to get that to register, you need to zone into w5 town with it equipped

similar for the cooking speed star sign and zoning into w4 town

No, star signs are only "active" when you're logged into the character.

Though some of them always affect skills (like the w6 farming ones) while others only affect skills when you check certain things (sailing map, w4 town, sneaking UI, for instance)

W4:

-Ignore every meal until Egg, Corndog and Cabbage are lvl 11 since they provide significant meal speed.
-Buy your lab chips weekly, you should have a lot more by now.

-Void armor is good on your ES/DK, try slowly working towards Chiz armor if you can at some point during W5. Use !gear2 for more info.

the tab 2 talent 14 "specialized skill" xp for mages includes any mage-focused skill, including divinity. so any mage class will level faster than non-mages
