So due to beanstalk, I get 100% of any AFK duplicated as sailing time. As a result, in a 2x minimum sailing time period (for me ~3hrs), I can claim my 40 chests 10x. (I only bought enough sluggos to get to 20 capacity). I wouldn't really call it micromanaging. All I need to do is log 1st character - go claim sailing. Then as I cycle each character, I just take 1 trip back to the 1st who is sitting at the sailing docks to also claim my sailing chests.
This is why Doot is so powerful for early W5 sailing since you get benefit of being able to proc sailing time whereas non-dooters require g.hampters on all (but might not reach 100% until beanstalk).

First boat usually the easiest because it’s just gold. My strat moving to new islands so far is pump first boat to get it fast enough then just full send that one. That is a judgment call for you to make. Bamboo is 1.1M (130B HP), Lanterns is 3.2M (250B HP). Given 2x HP and nearly 3x portal requirement, that's roughly 6x (napkin math). Bamboo alone would take you 33 hrs, and napkin mathing lanterns at ~198 hrs = nearly 10 days.
In my eyes, it isn't worth. But maybe, you consider beans justified enough to be pushing like this w/o MK.

on the other hand, something like OG chance for farming needs to constantly be on because of how the timers work for farming

it only calcs when you have the sailing map open, so you jsut have to equp star sign before opening map

its cause of how sailing works. you "accrue" time -> which is dumped into boats when you open the sailng map

yeah so based on what you've accrued, once you open map - it moves boats based on that amount - but with sign active, it'll have your boats updated to whatever speed tehy should be with it on
