also for obols, if you upgrade it directly it will most likely not count. if you go from silver to dementia, the gold and platinum one may not register. so the best way is to upgrade, look at the slab to register, and then do the next upgrade

in theory changing maps with the obol in your inventory works but I wouldn't risk it
