Correct. Base Critters give exp, bonus critters do not. The star sign does give base critters, so make sure to turn that on. Then you can use Maestro Infusion talent, the Balance of Proficiency prayer, Acorn Hat, Blooming Vine cape, etc.

The archers have a talent godly creation that gives random bonuses sometimes when you craft an object (+1 - +4 at the base and there is a bride that allows you to get up to +12 hence the +12 WIS on the gloves )
There is also a Post office crate the smithing one that gives you a 20% to get an extra slot to use an upgrade stone on it (so from 2 to 3 on the gloves)

I am always trying to not raise the sailing time too much. Minimum is 2h. I’d say 3 is also OK. But anything beyond that is a big trade off, since you could be making more bars in the time it takes for the ship to get there, and in return you get a rng roll to get the artifact. I would just take it a bit slow, save up for the third boat and try to increase speed slowly. Eventually things will speed up (I think it took me a couple of days or a bit more to unlock the trader). Hope that helps! I am not super advanced either in sailing 🤣
