For me what i had:
2nd DK/ES/SB + BM were on lab, that way i always had the sailing/gaming/div talents active and never had to worry about it. BM just there because he's useless. BB stuck cooking or chow stuff. With that others were pretty much only 1st bubo, dk, es, sb. SB on gmush, bubo/dk/es doing other stuff, rotating whatever i needed
So, sb was pretty much always there, it obviously starts helping more and more the higher your dmg is, but to get there having the money multi is nice.

is the only reason that people are doing the onyx statues quest on all their characters for the kachow statues from the reward? Or are there other bonuses to doing it multiple times that justify doing it ASAP, before turning in other statues?

Basically, once I've done it on one character, am I good? Can I just come back and do the kachow statues at a later date?

for each onyx statue unlocked, each statue deposited is worth a lot more

Here's a rough example Vid on how you deposit the Kachow Statues:
Usually I would do the amounts per tab. Amounts will change the higher the level.
But you try and maximize your gain from yellow alch bubble that gives % onto next level, if you deposit multiple levels at once, e.g. 10 levels, the levels in between won't get the benefit of that statue progress skip each level.

IMPORTANT: have atom cost reduction when you're starting to produce atoms

1. loot capacity. sailing artifacts are main w5 progression
2. w5 skill xp. you'll be sitting on divinity for a while, and skill levels help so its good to get it started early
3. respawn. portals get huge in w5
4. boss armor. recommended to save 5 points in preparation for boss armor, that way you'll be able to unlock all the pieces without having to do additional tasks
5. tab4 talent points and star talent: you might be low on elite tab talent points and stats when you're new to w5 but there are other sources. you can prioritize these over boss armor if you're not confident in crafting later armor
