its worth looking it up, because the pilots delivery is phenomenal, but the essence of the joke (true story though) this guy was overhearing basically a pissing contest between various pilots who were "checking in with ATC" to get their relative ground speed, starting off with a Cessna, and the ATC says something like "ive got you at 210 mph" then another pilot chimes in on the comms asking for his speed, ATC kicks back with "ive got you at 330mph" this keeps going for a while until a guys flying an F-16 (or some similar model cant remember exactly) pipes up and (in an attempt to establish clear dominance over the skies) asks for his relative ground speed, and ATC holding back a chuckle responds with "im reading you at 1242mph, have a nice day!"

This whole time the SR-71 pilot has been enjoying listening in

and in the most modest tone he opens up the comms and asks ATC to check his ground speed
