My buddys mom gave him her old honda civic 12 years ago, and he's been driving it ever since. It's an old car, but still looks nice and runs fine. I would have guessed it was worth 3-5 grand, but he told me it was only blue booked for 1. If that car is 1k, you could definitely find a working car for 500 or less
