Lava (by his own words) introduced green gems as a secure server side currency. That means players can't create/dupe it on their client.
The only use for the currency is companions. Those can't be put into loot tables cause that would mean they would roll clientside, therefore making green gems being serverside just an useless feature

Make it so pets generate green gems. The higher the rarity, the more gems they give. Each tier of pet will give one more gem per day than the previous tier. This can allow f2p players to get green gems in a fairly easy way. If it needs to be taken one step further, however, make it so only free pets give gems, but with a higher amount.

EVE is the only game as far i know who dosn't use the word "donation" for his game transactions.
