#Why do you make music? Where do you want to go with it?

Perhaps the most commonly desired reaction from listeners and producers in [e - D A N C E - m] needs no words at all. If you feelin' it and movin' to it, that's what's up. "Jam", "Bop", "Banger", even "Drop", many more, all these words came straight out of dance culture. Dance and music are like literally the oldest form of entertainment humans had (and perhaps the best.)

I didn't experience much of that aspect of music myself so far (though I'd like to, even though I can't dance for crap lol). Curious; how many of you have danced/clubbed or maybe even do so regularly? Or even DJ and bring the beats that get the booties bouncin'?

Music can accompany literally any activity; what kinds of stuff do you typically add music to? Work, study, commute, game, party, toilet, ...? And are there certain songs and styles that you use for certain contexts?

And if you create music, what do you get out of the experience? What do you want for the people who listen to your music?

music is the truest representation of myself that i know how to create
i'm a completely narcissistic asshole so if i can get more of myself out there (ie creating and releasing music) i'll do it
the enjoyment of others is secondary

I'm the type of person to make something that I like, especially music and drawing porn.

#

it's more like "wow that's so good I wonder if I can do it"

#

then I proceed to waste years of my life to reach the same level

I wasted years of my life not trying to get good at anything.

If you try something new, challenge yourself, meet some friends along the way, then that is certainly not a waste!

I'm sure you can go further than you think. Maybe you can't be Camellia mk. 2, but maybe you find your own style that is equally awesome.

I believe there is a threshold of speed past which it becomes much easier and more enjoyable to produce because you're feeling the music and hearing where you want it to go, instead of getting stuck on... everything else involved, it's a lot.

Recently I've been thinking about stuff that takes a lot of time, and then asking (myself, other people, internet, etc.) "is there a different, easier way to do this? how do other people do it? can I make some custom actions in Reaper that make a whole bunch of clicks and zooms and buttons and all this stuff and just do it with a single keypress?" or even just "which existing things should I get on hotkeys immediately to make this a little less of a point-and-click adventure?" So little by little, things are getting a bit more efficient...

Today a gal working a quiet part of a store was singing and she had a beautiful voice. Told her that, ended up getting her contact info, now I really want to get something decent as a sample so I can ask her about doing a collab

The main reason why I make music is definitely for myself. You see, I think it'd be weird for an artist to accommodate for everyone and everything unless they're paid for it. (ghost producers, commissions, etc.)

But, I also want to let people enjoy it and see what it has to offer. Story wise, enjoyment wise, lore wise, etc.
And while I'm not sure how to do it, I'm trying, at least in secret (due to bad mixing + trial and error).

There's nothing more elated than to see someone so moved by a piece of your work that you end up just crying with them pfft-

But yeah. If there's anything, it's to appeal to yourself (first), but with others in mind. Since there's nobody else runnin' this gig but you, and you can do what you want to be good so that others can enjoy it after.

You make, well, literally make, the party, after all.
And the others come to that party to enjoy it.

I've had a few performances (in groups) that brought some audience members the cryfall, and I had to summon all my willpower to not do that right on stage >__<

But yeah. If there's anything, it's to appeal to yourself (first), but with others in mind. Since there's nobody else runnin' this gig but you, and you can do what you want to be good so that others can enjoy it after.

There was a me, some many seasons back, that I'd probably have had the impulse to argue against this without hardly taking a moment to think about what you're saying first. But instead, upon considering, this seems like a very healthy and practical perspective to me.

When life was at an all-time low point for me, I settled into listening to nothing except for kawaii future bass. A salient reminder of happiness and a better future. I wish I could thank several dozen producers and singers for sharing some of their happiness; I might not be here right now if not for that

why i make music is cuz i just want to have something to cure boredom in summer breaks
from a silly note spamming thing i do turned into something i really take a lot of effort lol

also where i want to go is kinda already achieved. i got nice folks to hang out alreay (that's way more than enough for my boredom and loneliness' cure)

Yeah have to agree.

Also I can understand arguing against it and possibly wishing it it was all for yourself, which you can but it's also fine to share it for others.

Or alternatively, if you're doing it for others, then chances are you'll probably try and be mainstream rather than be yourself in the midst of it.

It's pretty much striking a balance between doing it for yourself and for others.

Since as they say, "Can't help others until you help yourself" But tbh it's better to have others help you while you help yourself.

Thus there's a balance of it.
No one-sided stuff either-

  • You're also kinda cultivating an audience in the process of making music, so this is why I'm reconsidering my first album to set myself up for what I will be making.

That's good thinking, if people like it and come back but then all of a sudden it's a different restaurant then nobody's partying

Perhaps not just an audience, but a community, at least until you get so big that participation in your own Discord becomes impractical : D

It is inspiring to see how many artists are out there with their own distinctive sound; and that listeners (at least the ones in the Discord-verse) have broad tastes and an appetite for new sounds (at least compared to most IRL people I've known)

i just saw this and thought it was interesting
i feel like making music is kinda the only thing i had high potential in from the beginning since a lot of things i did were related to music

i think the main reason i make music is because of the amount of the amount of rhythm/music based games i played in the past (i've played geometry dash for 7 years and osu for 3 years)
its also because everything else i do is boring as hell but maybe thats because i've done the same things for a long time.

making music for the past year and a half has been an interesting experience with how much i've learnt and it makes me wonder how much more i still have to learn, maybe i just like learning idk
but making any sort of improvement makes me want to keep improving, and i want everyone that listens to my music to see that i am improving and that i haven't been doing the same things for the past year.

I make music not only to experiment in different genres, but also to give the inspiration I gained as well as express myself in a medium I’m passionate about.

Toby Fox, DM Dokuro, ZUN, Machine Girl, HARDCORE TAN0*C (including camellia) and other amazing composers inspire me to this day.

so long as the noise you create is played back in a way that's mostly consistent every time, you make music

i make music to try and make people happy, since i suck at being a nice person irl

i genuinely enjoy music
it feels nice to complete a track and listen to the masterpiece you made
i make it because it makes me feel like im worth something
or maybe just an excuse to delay my studies...
either way its nice
makes me walk around in different ways
i get an idea for a song, i open reaper and try to expand on it
and when i complete it (eventually...) it feels nice to know that I made this
and being the egotistical piece of crap i am i obviously show it off, post it to my youtube and whatever
ever since i started making music in 2020 i developed my skills so much to the point where i challenge myself to try and replicate sounds in other songs
but now i seemed to have lost motivation, i barely open up reaper anymore
i get these really good ideas but i get too distracted and i forget about them
but still, making music is nice.
dont stop making music.

Was inspired from blacky/waikuro (before ik Camellia) and camellia (second) to start making music (that) I planned and published :D, before that, I was a "j-pop but not creative enough"-guy xDDD!!
Well almost every guys started without knowing how they do cook any music pieces, that's the first step for starting being musician :D
I make music as hobby.
Experiences once published: You can get more about how to fix the mix problem, maybe ideas for the nxt track etc. but do not try to be: "everything must be perfect" like mixing etc, else you gonna gib up making music.
