it's a "nickname" (used for generations-) to shorten our proper surname. yes, tonto has quite the story. i just googled to see if his beginnings are still out there and apparently there is now a "tonto mountain cat in kentucky" as well. they are not the same cat, but i got caught up reading about that one a moment ago.
