what the other guy said, also a useful tip for checking smudge duration is to keep it in your hand when you smudge and if it burns to the stem all the way and the ghost is still slow, it’s a moroi
but yeah easiest way is to check if the ghost gets faster while looping, if not it’s a thaye

when using the paramic be sure to be wary of ambient noises as well, those happen anywhere and they dont matter. youre listening for throws and interactions as well as any ghost sounds youd hear on the sound recorder

if you have the chops for it or you find a group that’s capable of it, doing 0 san 0 ev speedruns is actually pretty bearable. i got someone from T1 to T2 (1k pts) in just a single night some time ago by doing that. just focus on the side objectives and getting the ghost is a side perk

you can cross out a few by forced evidence, then you listen to their ghost speed and can rule out more. and almost every ghost has some unique trait which you can look out for. it definitely is possible but some ghosts (like shade) are hella bugged especially on small maps 😭

a few more unique traits: banshee scream (can be heard on parabolic and sound recorder), yurei door opening (only fully open or close), obake finger prints (6 fingers) and shapeshift during hunt, wraith can't walk through salt, deogen does a breath sound on spirit box and sound recorder. jinn can't turn off the breaker. shade won't do emf interactions in the same room with you. phantom disappears when you take a picture and is less visible during hunts. oni is more visible during hunts and can't do ghost mist events. spirit can't hunt for 180 seconds after being smudged instead of 90. demon can hunt at any sanity with its ability. smudging works shorter, the crucifix has a bigger range and only lasts for 20 seconds after being burned. poltergeist can throw multiple objects at once. mare can turn off the lights immediately after you turned them on (it has to be immediately tho and it's rare) revenant is super slow and gets super fast when it has los with you during a hunt. yokai can't hear your electronics unless it's super close. hantu loves to turn off the breaker and is super fast when it's cold. gets slower in warm rooms. goryo can't change its ghost room and is only visible on dots via cameras and when no one is in the room. myling can only be heard in a 10 meter range. twins have two different ghost speeds (one slightly faster and one slightly slower than normal ghost speed). raiju gets hella fast around electronics. mimic is hella annoying but is easier to identify with less evidence cause it'll always have one more evidence because of the fake orbs. moroi has forced evidence spirit box and gets faster the less sanity you have. thaye is insanely fast in the beginning and gets slower the older it gets. it ages when you're in the room with it but on insanity it can basically immediately hunt you and it definitely clapped my cheeks more than once with that

How do you guys check for Onryo? I feel like the "blow a candle out 3 times" trick never actually works for me and the ghost just hunts once he feels threatened enough

1. Be in hunting range (low enough sanity). 2. Place firelight on top of T2 crucifix. 3. Relight as soon as it's blown out. Keep it lit! 4. If the ghost blows it out twice in under 20s, it is Onryo. If it burns the cruci while the flame is lit, it's not Onryo.

Count seconds, not blowouts.
