So all ghosts have a threshold at which they can attempt a hunt, the general average is 50%, you can check the cheatsheet or wiki for numbers per ghost. So basically once you've hit >50% sanity most ghosts will be able to initiate a hunt. The board breaking happens if you run out of sanity using it (each question has a cost), move too far without saying goodbye (it's a fan of manners) or ask to play Hide and Seek. Only the first will lead to more hunts as your sanity is low enough any ghost can now try to hunt. All cursed objects can start these hunts known as "Cursed Hunts" once it happens every hunt after is cursed. There's less grace period (time between hearing the noise and the ghost coming to beat you up) and they last longer. Lower sanity will also mean more activity so more chance of chain hunting; there's a gap of 25s (20 for demon) between hunts, and if you smudge there's a blocker of 90s (60s for demon, 3m for Spirit) before they can hunt again.

Tier 2 salt doesn't do anything, outside of creating a line, and tier one creates tiny pile.

Biggest thing to help with dots is making sure to cover spots where ghost would normally roam to. Having cam outside of room helps with this since ghosts can and will roam out of rooms. You may see goryo dots a lot more often when placing dots in walking paths and at the entrance/exits of rooms
