It drains up to 75% sanity if you're near it the whole time, so it could hunt naturally. It only starts a cursed hunt if you do 1 of 3 things: throw the box, reach 0 sanity, or get the box close enough to the ghost so it walks to it.

Any ghost can close any door except the front door, the yurei is just more likely to do it. From my personal experience though every time I’ve seen a door go from fully open to closed it’s been a yurei (or it can be a mimic technically)

You can bring it close to the ghost but not so close so its an event instead of hunt (also used to find the ghost room) and then drain sanity

You activate it and place it on the ground and the ghost will walk towards it while singing. If you throw it on the ground it immediately starts a hunt. If it's too far away from the ghost, the ghost won't reach it and it just plays out and then closes

In nightmare with one evidence missing that ghost would have to show dots so if it is and the end screen that ghost then you've got one of the other two evidences uncovered misidentified or you're not on nightmare.
