Been a moment since I posted any astrophotography. I've been learning how to stack multiple nights data into a single processed image. The examples here are Andreomdea Galaxy, 2.5 hours of data, and 4 hours of data. Now, they were processed in a similar workflow, but, of course some of the values were different, but you can see how much more data 4 hours is!

There are 2 actually, M110, and M32. Sorry about the link, I was using lightshot, but the bot didnt like it. Also, if you look at this other photo, you can spot 4 or 5 galaxies in the image.

The second image is Bodes galaxy in the center, the small one above it with the red streak is the cigar galaxy. Not sure on the others, I'd have to break out my sky atlas.

I'm such a noob. There are way better people with way better gear out there. I only got started around christmas. I was/am a primarily observational astronomer. I have a 10" Newtonian reflector (Also called a Dobsonian because of its mount) that I use for visual. I also have a 6" newt, on a motorized mount. My wife likes that one since she can just use the hand control and say "Go to jupiter" and it does, and my first scope was a 114mm "Hadley", a telescope which uses about 40$ mirrors you can get from amazon, some hardware you can get at the local shops, and 3d printed parts, which I printed.

3600 Light years out, near Canis Major, its about 7 times the size of the full moon in the night sky, but of course, in anything but the darkest of dark skies its invisible. Let me get a single frame, and process it so you can see how faint some of this light I work with is.

This is a single 60 second photo. The format they get saved in is called .fit, so you have to do some processing to even get in image, but, this is without the correction of calibration frames (You take several. Lights - those are the photos of the object, Darks - Those are at the same sensor temp, and time of exposure, 60 seconds in this case, but with the camera completely isolated form light [I put the lens cap on, then put a hat over that to prevent light leakage], Flats - those are at the same sensor temp, but with the sensor illuminated as evenly as possible [ I use an ipad sitting on top of the lens]) All of those frames show different repeatable errors [Bad pixels, wierd lens geometry, etc] and get removed/fixed by the software, so you get much less noise, and much more data.

The light from space in many cases is so faint, that its invisible to the naked eye, and nearly invisible to a camera. The reason you take lots and lots of the same photo is you hope to illuminate the same areas of the sensor, over and over, then the software takes all of those photos, and stacks them on top of each other, each sucessive photo providing more data on what parts of the image have light, and what dont. I cant say I understand it all, I'm still VERY much a novice.

But, as an example, my 6 hours of andromeda data, that's nearly 200 gig. lol.

Apparently, quasars can only really form in galaxies that have SMBH's in the center, our black hole (Keep it together, we're professionals) is kind of small. (I said keep it together). Pulsars are also really really neat!

basically, star runs out of gas, goes boom. Gravity starts to squish it back together (Kind of like a black hole) but instead its mostly neutrons, and gets smashed so hard it can no longer exist as normal matter.

Then it starts to spin 😄 and the poles have huge magnetic fields, which is why we can "hear" pulsars spinning

Interesting, that is one crazy looking phenomenon to witness. kind of sad that our sun would just turn into a red giant and will turn into a white dwarf. instead of pulsars or black hole (while i'm glad it isn't gonna be black hole lmao)

I also knew that neutron stars were very very dense, like, a sugarcube sized thing would weight 100 tons on earth. But, I didn't realize they were basically a ball of neturons the mass of the original star, inside of an iron shell. Like some kind of forbidden M&M.

I've been looking to get sculpey, I usually just use monster clay

Never used monster clay, does it air dry? I've seen it used a few times, I think that's the clay that melts with heat, though I don't remember

And you can find sculpey at Hobby Lobby if there's one near you, Amazon also works but is slightly more expensive

I actually just looked at buying some more sculpey and the price has skyrocketed 😭

Yup you just bake with sculpey

To keep it from 'drying', make sure to keep it off of any cloth, cardboard, paper, wood (if it's finished wood the clay will eat at the finish, don't ask how I know lmao) certain plastics will also melt and turn to goo if the clay sits on it too long

Basically anything that will soak up oil

Been a minute since I've posted any astrophotos. Weather has been rough, and life getting in the way. However, I did manage to image the comet. This is just shot with my DSLR and a 300mm f4.5 lens, tripod mount, no tracking at 4 seconds, so there are some streaks from the sky moving, but, if you open in browser (Since discord murders jpg compression) you can pretty clearly see some of the tail! (Comet 12/p Pons-Brooks)

Nope, that's a single shot at totality. I have about 5gb worth of photos to dig through. I just cherry picked one really nice shot at totality to post lol.

Here's a progress shot. You can see a sunspot. I take all the images leading up to totality with solar filters, otherwise I'd burn out my camera sensor. For the 2-3 minutes of totality, you can image without any kind of filter, and even look at it with your eyes. (Which is.. wild..) Through my 6" telescope during totality you could easily see the CME's on the edges, big reddish/purple areas. You can sort of see them in the photo I posted first, too. This was all shot with my DSLR on a tripod, using a vintage 300mm Nikkor AI-S ED lens I got from japan for like, 100$.
