#Requesting a coach for lucas

I am requesting a lucas coach.

I struggle in offense, execution and combos. Usually i will be throwing out pk fire and zairs in neutral, but i struggle to follow up on them. I'd eventually land a stray hit that i know can be followed up on, but i find myself dropping my combos. i also want to learn djcz but execution for me sucks

i also (kind of) struggle in a few other areas that idk how to put into words.

I am usually available around 4-7:00 CST, with exceptions such as weekends where i am free from around 8:00 A.M. to 8:30 P.M.

I have been playing ultimate since release, and was interested in lucas. I have little to no tourney experience.

I can vc

pliant crane

velvet field

Nah

pliant crane

ok then

#

whenever youre ready

velvet field
#

Start whenever

#

What is your goal with Smash

pliant crane
#

probably compete in local tournaments, really striving to be best in my area

#

i have a long ways to go lol

velvet field
#

So you want to get into the competitive mindset

pliant crane
#

yes

velvet field
#

We're gonna start small

#

But the goal is to focus on your opponent

#

Not yourself

#

We'll start with attacking

#

When you attack, you want moves that go in the direction your opponent is or is coming from

#

This means PK Fire

#

Fair

#

Zair

#

Do not use nair to attack

#

When you're on the offensive

#

On the defensive it's more acceptable but when you're trying to hit, you need to be controlling the space betwen us

#

Your nair is around your body, so it's not doing that

pliant crane
#

i see

velvet field
#

More fairs especially

pliant crane
#

i used to play mario so i got used to not doing fairs often

velvet field
#

Switching chars a lot will do that

#

If you keep doing muscle memory will never form and you have spend all of your time thinking about your own moveset

#

Which means you're not focusing on your opponent

#

The end goal is always the other person

#

When I was playing I was watching you the entire time

#

Because ik how my character moves

#

And ik how his moves work

pliant crane
#

i see so focus more on the enemy and less on myself

velvet field
#

I don't have to think about it at all

#

Yes

pliant crane
#

i thought my neutral wasn't very good, anything to say abt it? anything helps rlly

velvet field
#

Let's not focus on that right now

pliant crane
#

ok

velvet field
#

When you're ready

pliant crane
#

that felt like it went a little better to me

velvet field
#

Your recoveries need work

pliant crane
#

ik lol

velvet field
#

And you just need more practice with movement

pliant crane
#

i never know where to start on movement

#

i know rars and b reverses and stuff but those dont rlly help

velvet field
#

I'm not talking about that

#

I'm talking about just moving period

pliant crane
#

oh

velvet field
#

Spacing your moves, avoiding hitboxes, the very basics

#

You gotta start identifying where the threat vectors are

#

Looking at where your opponent is and thinking about what can they attack you with from there

pliant crane
#

ah

#

i understand

velvet field
#

Go ahead

pliant crane
#

that was horrible xd

velvet field
#

You know you can do a 2nd up b if you bounch off the wall

pliant crane
#

i didnt know that

velvet field
#

If you press up b after bouncing within half a second

#

You get a 2nd up b

pliant crane
#

i see

velvet field
#

Why don't you really shield at all

pliant crane
#

idk

velvet field
#

You're not really prepared at all when I approach with an attack and you let yourself get hit everytime

pliant crane
#

i guess casual play with friends never rlly made me think abt it

velvet field
#

Even then shielding is important

#

If you're in a position where you're not able to get out the way

#

You need your shield

pliant crane
#

ok

velvet field
#

What's a difference you noticed with how I play Lucas compared to you

pliant crane
#

a lot more fairs and zairs in neutral

#

and just in general

velvet field
#

Think about that a little bit more

#

The fairs specifically

#

What was different about mine from yours

pliant crane
#

you spaced them a lot better

velvet field
#

Sorta the answer I'm looking for

#

There's a subtle difference

#

I'm curious if you noticed it

pliant crane
#

idk is it autocancelling them for more fairs afterward

velvet field
#

You're on the right track

#

They're not autocanceling but I can act faster than you

#

I wait until I'm falling before I fair

#

You do them as you're rising

pliant crane
#

yes i see

velvet field
#

The difference is you have to wait for the fair animation to end before you can do something else

#

But because I land, the animation switches to his landing animation and that's way faster

#

Just something to think about

pliant crane
#

i get it

#

fimding it a bit difficult to time the fairs like that

velvet field
#

Because you've never done it

#

So you don't know the timing

#

It's something you have to learn

#

But as soon as Lucas reaches the top of his short hop, that's when you do it

#

On the topic of animations

#

Do you notice when you get hit the most

#

In neutral

pliant crane
#

yes

velvet field
#

When is it

pliant crane
#

usually whiffing smth or a trigger happy nair on shield

velvet field
#

Not exactly

#

It's when you're dashing back and forth

#

We have something called the initial dash

#

it's when a char first starts running

#

During that animation, you cannot shield

#

So because you keep doing that, it tells me I am free to just hit you for it

pliant crane
#

oh

velvet field
#

Something else I was hoping you noticed was how I just sit still and wait for you to do something

#

Until you do or I decide to hit you for the dashing thing

pliant crane
#

yeah im kind of impatient

velvet field
#

Because when I do that I'm ready for whatever it is you're gonna do

#

If you pk fire I can shield it on reaction for example

#

You want to move sure

#

But you want to move with a purpose

#

When I decide to move I usually walk

#

And it's to make small adjustments in my distance from you

#

This is more elaborate so don't worry

#

Point is

#

Try not to dash back and forth so much

#

Move with a purpose

pliant crane
#

i see

velvet field
#

Burst range

#

What is it

pliant crane
#

your moves that come out the fastest that you can throw out at random or oos

#

or are those just burst options

velvet field
#

No

#

To both

#

Burst range is the range a character is in where it is impossible to react to what they're going to do

#

Moves in this range are burst options

#

I say this because you were letting me get way too close to you

#

Where if I did something you weren't going to be able to do anything about it on reaction

#

You have to act preemptively or you have to get defensive

#

It's not an ideal position to be in especially when you're cornered

#

You wanna figure out

#

How close does my opponent have to get to me before that feels like a threat

pliant crane
#

i see

#

so for example against you (playing lucas) is djcz range i assume

velvet field
#

Slightly larger than that

#

You'll get a feel for it with experience

#

This'll be my last one

pliant crane
#

ok then

velvet field
#

Final thing of note

#

You want center stage

#

Don't corner yourself like that

#

You have to fight me for center

pliant crane
#

ok

velvet field
#

Because moving backwards is so important

#

And the closer you are to center, the further away from the blastzones

#

It's just a good position to hold

#

But that'll be all for me for now

#

If you have questions feel free to ask

#

Work on moving

#

Work on falling fairs

#

Work on short hops

pliant crane
#

ill be sure to practice those

#

thanks for the session
