Only thing I can think of is do something like team fortress 2 or overwatch. Sniper in tf2 and widowmaker need to be scoped in for 1.5s before they get full damage on the shot.

They can shoot early if they want to get a quick burst, but it won't be the Max damage they could have gotten.

This is one of the only ways you can really ensure that the sniper rifle stays in the sniper role primarily, but doesn't ruin anyone who has the muscle memory. They can still do their quick shots, but it'll be for style and not for extra damage above just staying scoped in

bloom (bad precision that goes away with time) when scoping in like cs2
Inverse damage falloff, (short shots do less damage)
delay between when a reload finishes and it is possible to scope in again, with the scoping in happening automatically when delay is complete
someone suggested reducing hitbox size at closer ranges, I think something like this could work but may need tweaking
scope glint, any time a player is holding an awp they are more visible
ammo carrying capacity limit, allow players to only carry a certain amount of ammunition total

Inverse damage falloff just makes the gun feel weird but yeah I guess both of those are options. I don't think they are valid options though. They'd make the gun feel too weird. Adding delay also doesn't let people play at their speed. It nerfs their practice reducing hit box size doesn't really make sense imo. Scope glint could be good, but doesn't change the power of the weapon at all. Ammo cap limit doesn't matter since you just have your teammates carry the rest and drop for you when you need it

I suggested this a year ago after the sako nerf and again during the great sniper shortage. Make the Sako and Fal share a new ammo, make sniper round exclusive to awp, limit awp ammo.

You could even map sniper ammo exclusive to certain areas of the map.

New lobbies are populated with bots. Bots are terrible at vertical combat so the classic map makes much more sense for that. Bigbox has chosen to alienate day one players in favor of attracting new players. Time will tell if it works.

I'll explain what I believe.

The classic map is:
Easier to understand for new players
Way less intensive on the headset (battery lasts longer)
Way less bugs due to smaller amount of assets
Way easier for bots to navigate if they end up putting players in lobbies with bots (this happens for the very new players where their lobbies will be about half bots and half real players).

Evolving squads is easy to seem obvious for us, but we are not the average player. The average player has below a 1.0 k/d and wins about 2-3 games a week if they play the BR mode if they get lucky with teammates.

VR is not in a place where it can gatekeep people out and say "get good" like flatscreen games can. A flatscreen game can balance the entire game around competitive and knows people have played flatscreen shooters for more than 20 years.

VR isn't there yet and needs to generate the skill level of the average player and get more players in VR in the first place

flatscreen games don't care about making a change that will make 30,000 players unhappy because that's 1% of their playerbase.

30,000 players is half of the players that play pop1 in a month, they can't make the same caliber of decisions

if you create a evolving squads custom lobby it will fill up quick because there are a lot of people who join custom rooms on the server browser. way more than you'd think

In reality. Everyone else who are not part of the top 5-10% just quit playing the game at some point as they don’t feel any progress in their skill.

As someone pointed out on Reddit. Many people are quick to say that “pop1 requires 1000h+ playtime to git gud” without realizing the problem of telling a new player that he needs to grind 1000h on a game to “git gud”.

BB needs to find a way to keep new players engaged for a longer period of time. Or a way to have “casual BR mode”, alternatively maybe finally bring back “ranked” for all the experienced players who have been playing for 3y now and care about their stats and are looking to prove that “they are the best”.

I don't think we are considering them as an important part of the community, people are not watching their stream because how boring it gets to see them looting. Theres no action. And if content creators don't create content which is free advertisement, and only advertisement , this game is dead no matter how FTP players join

except you can't make that claim about the 90%... put evolving squad and classic out at the same time for a week and see how many are on each. when i jumped on my steam account for first time the lobbies in classic were full of people excited for evolving coming back when announced. since classic has always been default since brought in there is no valid data to support community wants one vs the other outside the 10% that are here on discord which to your point is going to be biased on the other end.
at the end of the day even having it side by side would be better than not at all. ppl would take slow filling evolving over nothing any day.
also if the 90% truly enjoy classic and are below 1kd thus they dont want to play against the top tier, they would benefit from the fact of NOT having those top 10% run classic map, no?

It's not a player base thing. If the numbers are extreme as what you are claiming we 10% proved we can keep those lobbies full all hours of the day for the last 3 years. If there are indeed so many new players then they would have no problem filling the classic map. Has to be a server or man power thing on big boxes side to not have both options available. actually people watch the streams usually because of the creator themselves and not the caliber of the content. Lulls in action are actually really good for streamers because it gives them time to interact with chat which is the whole reason that certain games got popular. Ghosts of tabor for example is very popular because there is about 60s of action and then like a 7 minute period of the streamer looting/just running which allows for easy interaction with chat which is why GoT is one of the other viewed vr games.

Beat saber and VR chat are 2 of the highest viewed vr games specifically for this reason as well. People often go to streams to interact and chat with the streamer, the gameplay is often a side thing.

from what I can tell, they don't have enough active players to stay under their time thresholds for matchmaking if they have an additional evolving queue up all the time which is why they rotate it around.

Also I'm sure there's some psychological reason that they rotate it in and out to get people talking about it in socials etc.

this is exactly the point. If you remove a feature people want, people will talk about the game and the feature and give free press. Every company nowadays tries to avoid paying at all for advertising. This post and all the outrage on all platforms about the awp change/bug was an immense amount of advertising for the game.

I'd love if they ran both as a test. I'm sure theres a multitude of things they'd need to change to do that. They'd need to update the lobby HUD to add an additional slot for it and then try to make it neat with that. They'd need to have another set of dedicated servers for it. Perhaps they only have so many lobby codes/servers as well. I'm not sure all the reasons exactly because I don't have the backend info, I can only make guesses, but simply from a business standpoint, if it WOULD bring in more business, they'd be doing it, that's just how business works.

people talk a lot about BB having no idea what they're doing, but they are a small company under the huge umbrella that is META. META understands business quite well, and if the pop1 devs aren't adding a feature/aren't changing something, there has to be a reason it's not happening that would reduce the amount of money META would be making from the decision.

You really think they're keeping a feature out of the game just because they don't like us? Nah. They've run numbers on their backend a lot and have either discovered that it would actually lower overall playerbase, increase queue time too much, or prevent something else they are planning for, or hell maybe it's just a future feature that isn't out yet. Businesses often plan multiple years in advance and have a pretty strict timeline for when they want to do what.

Again, I can only make guesses, but if they aren't doing it, there's guaranteed a reason related to business why they aren't, and to not understand that is to be a conspiracy theorist.
