#Where the Gameplay of POP:ONE needs to be

Talking about the gameplay of POP: ONE, I personally think it’s getting too fast-paced for people to stop and enjoy the Battle-Royale. This is my honest opinion on the current (5/10/2023) gameplay of POPULATION: ONE.

The GOOD aspects of POP:ONE gameplay
I think the map and the playfield of this game is outstanding. The recent update that changed the areas around Outpost is good. The idea of many little buildings spread out around a hill-like landscape, in my opinion, is better than one huge location on top of a hill. Could use more trees though. The actual sandbox part of it needs a huge amount of work, though. For example, the community-made map is good, but it needs no/better water and a few fixes that were lazy-ended. For the Sandbox in battle-Royale to work, it needs to feel more natural to the rest of the map and have more than just a few placed assets that don’t look polished compared to the rest of the map. So all I’m trying to say here is this: Sandbox NEEDS Polishing! Another thing the original devs of POP:ONE got right was the theme of the game, and the events/skins that can be earned from playing the game. The event in Season 1 of the game where the tower first opened was the best event of all time for the gameplay of the game because it gave a purpose for players to play that connects to the excitement of a new location. More events/monthly’s that released characters revolving around the new sandbox locations would definitely help and add specialty to the maps that rotate in.

The “NOT-SO-GOOD aspects for POP:ONE gameplay
So far as we know, the current matchmaking problem is big. Level 62 squads in a game with level 10 squads. The devs (judging by all the recent updates) in order to fix this problem try to hurt, nerf what the high-leveled players by giving a faster TTK in all the weapons at the close range to kill the higher-skilled players faster, but this failed because it just gave faster paced games that lower the fun of the game. Picture this — imagine taking 10 minutes to get into a full game just to play at max 5 minutes to as little as 30 seconds. That doesn’t sound fun, does it? With the new meta in the weapons with higher TTK/damage, it works with half-evening the playfield gun-wise, but quickens the match and makes the matches shorter than the loading process. This is the main problem with the weapons right now as well, and I suggest the big solution to fix most of these problems: expand the map outwards by about the size of Kingdom. Add a discord challenge to add the specified landscaping areas accordingly, and the top 10 winners get their map at those edges. Add a longer TTK to at least the SMG’s and Assaults and add the new weapons that were leaked (and most likely still ready for release too) into the game. Also, add new character skins revolving around every new location over the course of all the new monthly’s. Also, another thing that is not as important, but plains feels a bit outdated right? The pipes since Kingdom age don’t feel like they have a purpose, so why not get rid of them? Maybe replace plains with a huge maze, garden area from the Kingdom entrance? Add farm houses and extend the Bureau base a bit as well? Anyway, these are the things that I think need to be fixed in the gameplay aspect of POP:ONE

Welp, this was a very long post for me, and probably for everyone that actually reads through the whole thing lol. Happy Reading!

The current sandbox is terrible.

  1. It's buggy. There's plenty of areas that you cannot climb because invisible walls above your head. WTF. BigBox needs to hire some actual game testers and give it proper quality control.

  2. It's a death trap. Just about every spot in the sandbox is easily attacked from the huge hills surrounding it. There's not enough cover points. The only reason to enter the sandbox area is to loot.

  3. The hills are too big and lazy. I think some parts of the sandbox would be better if it wasn't completely surrounded by hills. There could be other objects or whatever to block parts of the sandbox from far away.

  4. The sandbox is really the hills. That's where you will be standing and doing most of your fighting. The hills. It's not the new content being spotlighted but the border of that content which is the placeholder hills.

On the bright side:
It looks nice. It's a refreshing take. I can see why the simple minded people picked it.

the tower event was amazing and unmatched. having the challenge to visit tower X number of times was excellent. remember going from hot dropping all the time to taking a pod and seeing every single player fly directly to tower game after game and just be complete chaos for those first couple weeks.

Well definitely agree with the placement of it the hill between tower and sandbox shouldn’t be there. The hills being lazily built too I also agree, but they aren’t useless. They would be better if the concept I’ve always had of where the hills were replaced by a huge forest and cabins would be awesome, or trees on top of the hill so I feels more covered. But yes, right now those hills need to be fixed. I just like the concept of the smaller Outpost buildings spread out everywhere. It’s a neat idea.

I didn't say the hills were useless. I said the opposite. The only useful thing there is the hills which is why the winning battles happen on the hills and not in the sandbox. And that's the problem.

Yes a forrest or cabins or towers or signs could do well to help block the area. Even some hills. Also it's deep in a trench but it might be better off elevated.

Which makes you wonder why it is in a trench, and that's probably because they knew it was too easy to shoot people there from far away. And if that's the case, they should never have used it.

Like I’m picturing the current sandbox rotation have a jungle skin, kinda like the (VERY overpriced) bundle with the M10 skin in the shop. Pairing those with some sort of new “Sandbox Store” section would be cool.

Yeah themeing it with the paid stuff would help sell skins probably.

Lot to read but I agree with most of this aside from the pipes in plains are for hard cover travel (if those are what you’re speaking on). Imo, Don’t think a bigger map is a fix but just a bandaid.
Not being a historical gamer I still know that I enjoyed the slower TTK than other games offer. They probably did shorten it so new players get kills but new players not instantly dying would probably be more fun at low level in current game. Kinda like your 30 sec example; I think it’d be rough to be new and get killed in 1sec of close range battle back to back to back.
I think much of what you’re saying could be fixed by expanding AR range some, expanding SMG range less that AR expansion, and making a shotgun a desired piece of current loadout by quicker TTK than spray.
I don’t very much hold knowledge of how other games do it but I think BB rotates meta way too much. I think the best option for balance is to attempt to make each weapon at some ⭐️ a worthy addition to top tier load-outs.
Gets slightly old to have +/- 2 weapons as meta per update.
