usually the 'protection' is using a modpack that's known to be decent and not mega buggy

people definitely do make backups with various backup mods, but the frequency is much less than you're saying. because it's crazy overkill for something that in a decent modpack happens very rarely

The Security Craft mod has something similar that can make blocks unbreakable. I think it can make certain areas unbreakable as well, but I'm not so sure on that one. Having only admins is the trick part with that mod, foranyone with the mod who crafts the right item can make certain block unbreakable and can only be broken with a tool.
Other than that, you might want to try to research something that is close enough to making areas unbreakable.
I've seen server owners do it before, most likely with addons.
