obv if it significantly alters worldgen, datapack or mod, worldgen will be super laggy, hence you use a mod like chunky to pregen chunks if that's something you're interested in

the lag is only on first-time chunks, that's why pregen exists

that means the only delay is sending chunk information between the client and server, which is like 1% the demand of generation

so yes, pre-generating should fix all that

but pre-gen on your pc if it's ok specs, then upload to server

otherwise most servers often crash doing it due to resource overload, which is more in control locally

Depends on what you are trying to do. A good mod pack can just be a collection of mods which you and your friends are excited to play with and have fun with.
If you mean a refined mod pack that has the potential to be successful on CurseForge or Modrinth, I think (I can't speak from experience, because I never made one) you would need a vision what it is supposed to be, what experience it is supposed to provide, than find mods that fit that vision, maybe configure them, playtest, identify issues, figure out how to fix them (add/remove mods, configure mods, change recipes etc.) and repeat that cycle until you are happy with the result.

Also I don't think this is technically the right channel for that question. 😅

So, I need advice on modpacks in general. I hope this is in the right place.
I'm a old veteran (4 years ago) when it comes to modded minecraft and I can't imagine playing without mods.
At the same time my fiance wants to experience the newest version of minecraft.
So what I'm looking for is: a modpack with no (or minimal) biome changes and preferably no new mobs.
But still be 1.20.X
Modpacks I used to play in the past include: agrarian skies, Regrowth (loved the magic on this one), Skyfactor, and like 5 other mod heavy packs. But I realize none of the packs I played are in 1.20.x anymore. So I'm looking forward to trying something new?
We're not looking for a vanilla experience, but having no biome changes lets us know what's vanilla, and what isn't. (since, modded blocks still show what modpack they are from in the hud anyway)

I'm already browsing through the curseforge modpack list, but most of these don't list actual mods, so I have no idea whether they touch biomes or mobs.

If you want to change recipes, I think you could use CraftTweaker or CubeJS, but its simpler to just make a simple data pack to overwrite the recipes you want to change. If you want to use that like a mod and not add it to every single world manually you can use something like "Global Packs".

So, I'm putting together a 1.12.2 modpack. Currently, the main focus is around the Parasite mod, so I was hoping to make the modpack more challenging. Easy Magic has this functionality (configurable) - it's not listed on the curseforge page for the mod but it is listed on the modrinth page, although it's disabled by default and you'll need to enable it in the configs yourself

Read the mod page, you run commands to start pregenning a radius in your dimension of choice

I do 10k each way, but that’s a 40gb world lol

5k is probably more manageable, but ultimately, it’s up to you. I wouldn’t go below 5k, but it’s your choice

Also look at C2ME. It’s incompatible with quite a few mods from my experience, but when it works, it massively increases chunk generation performance and speed - if you have any weird performance/lag/crash issues, you can always just remove it
