@hollow blaze I would suggest that you probably want to wait for the mod developers who created it to develop a port to 1.16, as mods for other versions simply will not work. Learning programming for the first time is tricky and it takes most people years of experience to get actually good at it.

I would say the userbase for WoW might be larger than the modding community for MC.
But if you look at the games CF has support for, the vast majority are always online games that don't have singleplayer and CurseForge started with these games.

Does the curseforge launcher use a separate java version for minecraft than whatever I have set on my path/JAVA_HOME? My IDEs and... well basically everything else seem to respect me using openjdk 11 but curseforge does not seem to even list that in the available JREs in settings.

It uses the java that comes with minecraft, and cannot currently be changed as changing it breaks curseforge.
You can use java arguments if you wish to change it, but using j11 isn't really recommended.

He did setup a server before, remember it taking a long while for us to figure it out but it was like 2 years ago so we have no clue.
Also it being a custom modpack without a serverpack
I do remember guiding him before that time, so I'm trying to learn about it for history to repeat itself again
