4-8gb is the recommendation from the community but depending on the pack you could go up to 10gb or higher if the dev specifies

Honestly hosting doesn’t always have to cost. There are free hosting alternatives that won’t be crap like Aternos.

You can always use the mod e4mc which can tunnel a LAN server to the internet. This will allow you to essentially use your local session as the server. Perfect if your PC has decent enough specs.

Otherwise, if you’re game enough to port forward (and physically able to — nowadays some ISPs put you behind a paywall) you can just fully self host the server natively.
