#Ability to Boil off Water from Chunklets

A thought occurs:

Any tool that causes heating effects in water should still act on chunklets.

Consider a chunklet of 1000kg iron, and 3000kg water. uW'ing the chunklet should still heat the material such that water would vaporize, and leave the chunklet.

Now, if this were implemented, I could feasibly see some ppl complaining that they aren't getting the water content they expect for refilling, or that physics aren't acting on the chunklets as expected, because vaporized water would provide some amount of thrust in random directions. But, that doesn't matter. For reasons.

This would encourage being efficient with your tools. Yes.

I'm thinking of being able to launch OCP, without an MPU of any kind, and hauling back an entire cargo hold full of nearly pure ores. Helps reduce functional mass with a totally physically filled hold, I think

#

Instead of waiting for AOP to boil everything off.

I’d stick with the Purifier on the OCP instead of manually boiling off the chunks, even with a gimballed laser or MWG

It would only make sense for the uW to do this, really, I think? Yeah, the lasers could do it, but you could feasibly do mass min/maxxing in OCP leaving MPU behind and boiling off water externally

#

It would only open up a very niche new playstyle. Which could be valid for other vessels also, but the idea was generated from the OCP, initially

#

Also, just for an added sense of realism. If you heat up a chunklet, it feels like it would make sense for the water to boil off. The major issue becomes when someone asks 'well, if water is boiling off, why does it not move the chunklet'.

Adding chunklet motion would increase physics engine demand, I think, and would be a pretty hard hit on machines like mine.

#

Maybe?

#

Actually, @dusty timber ...... if dV did simulate chunklets being acted on randomly by water vaporization, would that increase the physics engine load?

They are already moving when rocks break apart, right? And drones makes chunklets move, without a crazy hit.

I did some napkin math that shown that it would not be detectabe on the scales in game

#

So, no. It probably could. It would introduce weird things.

#

probably not worth doing

I do figure if such a thing was going to be added, it probably would've been so already. I also figure that sometimes the wrong idea can lead to discussion that generates a right one 😛

#

Might be more mod territory, though... thinking about it now. Hmmmmm
