The player (captain) should talk to the crew more, in my opinion. It could be after an interaction with another ship or they could say something when an event happens!

It could be to focus on a specific quest or to give priase for a certian job. I was also thinking they could comment after I crash into a roid at 50m/s yelling at my driving skill or the resulting damage (it feels weird that they are unbothered by a reactor leak).

It could also be at the station where you task them to get info on potential POIs or to gain knowledge of certian stations or moons.

I was wondering if something like this is gonna come up after I last played in January. Random chatter is already a thing but not internally. Either just cosmetic or with an ability to get something positive would be nice.

I like the idea of sending your crew to recon POIs.
“Here you all go, here’s 1000 bucks and 2 days, see what you find” would be a great way to find a few POIs before a dive

I feel like that would be a station service for navigation or mapping. It would be great for the minners guild

Are you technically still a skipper when you’re in space?

Are you in a ship? Are you sailing the Sea of Stars? Then, yes.

Though I’d argue that space ships have more in common with planes than with boats.

Counter argument: space ships are just ships that move in one more dimension. You can completely shut down a ship at sea and the worst it can happen is the currents pushing it to someplace dangerous. Same with a space ship except, you know, space. Same handling characteristics too because innertia works the same way.

If anything a spaceship is closer to a car than to an aircraft.

Well I guess my point is whether or not space ships would even have a skipper.
In military ships (at least that I’ve been on) the captains controls don’t actually change the rudder or the engine power, they just send a message to the crew to change the engine power to whatever the captain has asked for.
So the skipper doesn’t make decisions, just follows orders
But in these space ships, you technically don’t need crew. So you’re just the captain and there wouldn’t be a skipper on board.

Every vessel has to have a someone in command, by law. That's the skipper or captain. Whether the skipper also serves as helmsman or pilot is a different matter.
