so I don't forget to write 'em out in more detail

Mechanical-
-stuck thruster, terminal spin; slung off the lifeboat w/ crew inside?
-ship stripped by previous crew in-Rings; intact but a husk w/ only hull value?
-loss of power/computer; abandoned ship due to mechanic astrogator incompetence? best for a "rich kid" ship?

Social-
-crew mutiny/fight w/improvised weapons, lack of pay/faction dispute/social issues?
-it's not abandoned- there's a lone survivor; space crazy/staying to maintain a claim on the ship while everyone else left in the lifeboat (pay him off/hire him?)
-Pirate trap: use rep/pay for them to release boarded crewmember or lose them; ship powers up as UIO-affilated?

Losing a crewmember from a choice is harsh, but... other events already can do that and there'd always be a choice to pay 'em off, even if debt?

You might want to consider that the order of events is that a derelict ship exists in the simulation first, and then when you approach it game decides which story applies to it. Which makes things like "this ship has no thrusters" quite challenging

The smoke and mirrors used is that you can replace some hardware in the dialogue, but that will only work well for hardware that is not actually visible. Same goes for damage.

Could the game examine the equipment of the ship and choose a story based on that? If so, you could add ships with missing equipment to the derelicts.

Yeah, I was thinking something like that: there's no "missing" hardware, it just picks an applicable story.

"Stuck thruster" would be for a ship beat to shit, "stripped ship" would be for something with a low equipment value and empty slots (no MPU and similar), loss of power/computer would be for a relatively-functional ship (easy to swap offscreen), and the other three don't have condition matter as much.

funny as it'd be for a pirate ship to try to power up, immediately suffer a critical drive failure, and get ARM'd back to E-prime

-out of these six, which sounds most interesting for me to type out fully as an example?

things that require the ship to be in a specific shape are tricky. Right off the bat they would be pretty rare, since you need to coincide the derelict generation roll with story pick roll.
