relating from: https://git.kodera.pl/games/delta-v/-/issues/3650

this is a rather bare-bones suggestion, as i ran out of time and effort to achieve it, but enough to bring a lot of this idea across, and is split between 3 parts

Part 1, image 1:

This first section is dedicated to the equipment side of the hud. It involves having the equipment with their names printed on the plastic of the hud, with 5 square LEDs next to them to display the variability with use. this doesn't really yet have a way to display damage, but that could be done through either using a couple of 7-segment parts to show percentage, or switching out the square LEDs to show the damage and using the 7-segs to display usage (7-seg options are better displayed on the second image)

Part 2, image 2:

This section is dedicated to the variables that every ship has (masses, DV, etc.) i didn't put in velocities as i didnt have a good enough variation to this to make it worth drawing too. this one uses 7-seg LCD with any text that is static being done as printed on plastic also, including decimal points. this also features a "warning LED" to the right that would blink whenever a value goes above (or below) a safe zone, although im not too happy with it's current idea of just a red LED, so could be worked on

Part 3, image 3:

This is the most outlandish idea, and probably the least feasible to impliment. a 64x64 display of square LEDs to represent lidar. probably a really hard implimentation for it, but a way to go with the pure LED theme. there's a few other parts i would like to draw, but those come later

#

Part 4:

Functionally, this could work similarly to other huds, but i wanted to take a slightly different approach to this one. being that it's purely LED, it could probably work on an ATARI 2600 without issue, so to make for the very durable look, each LED segment updates sequentially instead of at once (except maybe lidar, and could work on every segment is in the queue or on a per-panel basis). this could tie in with a slight rework of the computer while using it to warrant it being not a "standard physical hud", as there's already two of those. this one will have the faulty connection blank readouts instead delay the time in-between segment update further (or produce a more random interval), so there will always be a readout just it may take longer to read. this could benefit those who constantly take emp damage by either taking on MWGs too much or are too careless with the gungnir, and also would make sense for a hardier piece of equipment at the cost of being clunkier

Interesting!

The design with the old timey digital numbers looks really neat.
I do worry a bit about the screen real estate if it were solid panels however.

The one with the bars - i think maybe would look better, if the bars were in front of the text, so they would all be aligned

yeah that i can see. i am looking at making a redesign at some point soon as this current design was kinda rushed as i just wanted to get the idea out

#

perhaps the screen space issue could be solved by having only the LED parts set in plastic, and using glass for the print

#

hm i'll look into it

I really like this idea, saving this

#

Idea 3 could be done with a relatively simple shader maybe? I think ?

I want mechanical flip displays like an old alarm clock.

drifting girder
#

that actually sounds just as cool as the LED idea

#

maybe when i actually get round to sitting down and making a redesign with a bit more effort, i'll make a second one that uses something like that too

It doesn't actually make a lot of space on a ship, though, even if a whole display flipping through every value to change one word looks cool.

drifting girder
#

fair, but it would still be cool

#

would probably be suited for something that would act as an incremental counter though

#

not really anything that fits that description currently though

I am 100 percent all in for little pushers moving around little painted ship wedges.

Not sure if it fits this particular HUD, but it would be really cool to have a physical HUD with received EM irradiation power indicator.
Preferably with a physical looking slider along it that can be locked into place for indicating current ship's level of EMP shielding.

#

(Player doesn't move it, but it moves if the HUD is installed on a ship with different shielding level)
