You seem to have targetted the reactor of the ship.
The autopilot tries to do what you asked it to do - keep the same velocity as the reactor of the ship, which is constantly changing.
gonna say I did not know you could differentiate the target on ships between the hull and the reactor. I'll keep that in mind for future
How do we target different parts of the ship?
Also, while the explanation is perfectly understandable, it might still be more sensible to make the autopilot work on centre of mass.
QoL and stuff. And QoL is not something that only affects the game - one could apply those considerations in lore. If something is causing consistent clearly unwanted behaviour, it is likely, that a system would be constructed in a way, that avoids it.
from what I've seen, just clicking on the fore, centre, or aft sections of a ship will target each section respectively
