Yaay
Yes please, but would I get to keep the salvaged ships?
I vote no, you get either a cut or a fee? Otherwise it'd be much too profitable
Doies the S&R then get to keep your ship next time you get stranded and need them?
Salvage quest reward: unlock the SAR ship!
That would be a nice option, once that ship is actually playable.
Sure and next time you call Search and Rescue they get to keep YOUR Ship XD
I mean, if it's a reported derelict and the crew is all dead aboard the ship...
Also, it would be cool to meet the crew members that you rescue; possibly giving POI's or tips.
That would indeed be nice
Yeah I feel like that would be a Nice Bonus. Maybe your Crew might even know them.
Hell there could even be some quests that you can only start by rescuing people
Usual rescue fee is 10% ship value
This mean a reward anywhere from 100'000 E$ to 30'000 E$
Which is fair IMO, especially if you're getting the locations of the ships when leaving Enceladus.
Having this also provide Insurance money would be nice, also as a way to get the "Be insured for 1 million E" achievement, since finding salvagers can be rare and you can't really opt to use your own money when doing normal repairs
So you could opt to take the reward in E or double or 1.5x the value in Insurance
Salvagers be workin' on the cheap if all they make off a K-37 is E$30k
Especially if you consider the cost of remass; not sure how that all factors out though.
A miner makes E$60k~ on a bad day.
in a stock K-37
I'm mostly basing this on the fact that derelicts have (for me at least), ranged anywhere between 1 million and 300k E$
I think 100k is still not worth salvaging for.
It's at least a 24hr round trip.
100k isn't worth the time, especially when a dedicated miner is capable of making so much more.
Maybe it could occasionally give you the option to buy the salvaged ship at a discount? That’d be some incentive
Or the Captain you helped could randomly appear and offer to join your wing for free or at a major discount as a thank you
Or maybe have a chance to pop in and save you from a pirate attack once
Or give Quests and POI's
my understanding is that if you dedicate to salvage you would receive several salvage coordinates while in-ring
that way if the pay is 10%, you're not making just one salvage per dive
I'm all for this idea. I think this and the bounty hunter career path could have more of a "formal mission system" where you can choose to emphasize that style of play instead of just mining like normal and hoping something happens.
The way I imagined it is that you can get an assignment to go out and do specific tasks which will net you a set reward.
This could be as simple as "go to this location and bring back a lifepod" or search a series of coordinates and bring back derelicts.
You get paid for completing a patrol even if you don't find anything, with a further bonus for recovering lifepods. But recovering a derelict that you already know is there only pays you a set amount because you are under "contract" instead of just finders keepers.
This gives dives a lot more variety than just "drop in on the dense portions of the rings and mine rocks". You could configure your ship towards rescue operations and only mine on the side a bit because your contract covers your basic expenses.
A similar thing could be done with the bounty system, if you are licensed to hunt you should be able to take patrol assignments and view the "most wanted" list. You should also be able to learn drop locations without having to find and talk to a hunter NPC.
Empty Cradles Arms as equipment!
Perhaps if you’re on SAR, you’re on Enceladus Station payroll and your insertion fees are covered?
Yeah that's the idea, an alternate way of playing where mining is a secondary objective
I love everything you all are saying
Most tow trucks don't get 10% of the car's cost to tow it.
Most Tow Trucks are not in Space fighting off Pirates
Which is probably the reason you ARE getting 10% of the ship's value.
Value of the ships can get up in the millions, though, depending on equipment and damage.
10% +dive costs?
My only issue is that you're comparing tow truck driving; a job who's round trip is 8 hours max (some tow companies max out at ~2 hours range,) to a job that's at least a 24hr round trip. Not to mention operating costs.
Just compromise with me here, and say I get to keep ships that are marked as abandoned. 😛
"Which is probably the reason you ARE getting 10% of the ship's value"
In-game, I think there's a roster of all the ships that is referred to. Maybe we get a look at this roster?
Because of the risk, and time sink you get 10% of a ship's value as compensation + Enchilada covering what you need for the dive. Meaning you would probably only pay crew, services and crashes. But also being part of the S&R means you would probably have easy access to insurance, so that also covers damages
You would have almost not expenditures, so
- Not gaining as much as mining, but
- Not having to pay a large chunk of what you mine off
Kinda balances itself out
You gain less, but you spend less
So the net money you gain would be similar IMO
That's all well and good, I still want to be able to keep ships I salvage if they're marked as abandoned which is already in game
If you find them on the wild (with no coords given), finders keepers
If someone tells you, as a S&R operative, "hey there is a ship here" then you dont have the finders part, so you dont get the keepers part
Ships are listed as abandoned at Enceladus. It's referenced in game, I'll see if I can grab a screener.
Enchilada never said where it was, so the "finders keepers" argument wins here
Also, "the rings are always in flux" you're never going to get accurate coordinates.
Still, you do get quite the aproximation
With an astrogator, for sure
From "the whole belt" to arround this "30x30km area" its a huge improvement in precision
maybe that could be a skill for the Astrogator. To improve tracking precision of salvage contracts
Going back to the profit factor though, I don't ever want to salvage stock K-37's
They are worth little more than 30k at 10% recovery fee.
If I saw a salvage contract for a ship worth that little, I'd leave it in the rings.
K37 are small, tow trucks are big. I think this opens towards new ship specialized types that come without a mineral hold, but perhaps allow you to tow more than a ship at once. So you could recover two or more small ships in a single dive. Also perhaps there could be a specialized tug drone for certified salvagers, that's similar to the mining companion and can autonomously tow a small ship while you stay in the rings?
Also regarding income: perhaps different types of salvage jobs
- my ship is stranded, please help! - get a 10% or whatever fee
- this ship is unclaimed and abandoned - ship is auctioned and you get a higher than 10% fee, or the option to purchase it at a discount
I think Koder's 10% was from naval salvage, though I'm not sure.
I thought it was from the fee you pay when you get Searched and Rescued?
Actually, the last time I got rescued the game just reloaded the save. Might have to test losing.
Nah you should get back in station with a damaged/fuel-empty ship but the content of your hold still there. The save reload only happens if you hit the game over screen, i.e. the ship explodes
My last explosion was a while ago now but I don't think this has changed. I had a rescue not very long ago, this week I think
Yeah, just that my last out-of fuel was probably ancient, and people have talked about the change, but experiencing it is what cements it in your mind.
But I do believe that Koder usually uses naval references for industry standards like that.
Keep in kind, this is contract salvage we're talking about, not 'pure' salvage, as would be the case with a derelict.
