It's where people go to be forgotten, to be left alone or to try and make it big, if they think highly enough of themselves. Problem with post-scarcity in Union is it leaves a lot less room for people who want to be better off than everyone else.
Now that people start being born there in a bad situation they didn't choose, Union starts to think maybe they should do something about it. Most people there don't like Union too much though, so that complicates things.

[Also responding to WaterDragon] The Long Rim isn't some kind of voluntary poverty zone. It's a locale completely based on crippling poverty and scarcity in space that exists because a. fixed gate based ftl is by definition exclusionary and b. Union can't settle space effectively.

Peat got the codename due to having shut down a despot during negotiations on integration of a non-core planet, one where said despot considered him to be "worth his weight in gold" as he thought he was on his side.

He was not.

Eventually it leads to said rule collapsing in on itself, but that's a different story involving another Lancer of mine.

it's shit. it's a shit place full of things going on, and it's basically just the wild west in space

this isn't bad, but basically it's nigh impossible to control because Union unfortunately can't take the proper time to make sure everywhere around the Rao Co is fine when HA and the KTB may be commiting crimes on the Shore

Honestly, I think In Golden Flame is probably the best fanmade adventure ever, but it's interesting how it makes Union out to be even more absurdly inept than its already portrayed as in canon.

Besides the whole ""deliberately ignoring Hell's Gate"" thing, the Union characters regularly come across as the most whiny, navel gazing, and insufferable people ever. IGF was also the one where Union lost so badly to a irl aughts level society they allowed chassis to be captured and somehow reverse engineered, they got caught in a grinding ground war, and basically were powerless to stop multiple genocides.

Shackling is not portrayed as a 1:1 parallel in SSMR, SSC's legal and social treatment of NHPs in the specific context that is the Farm is what is portrayed as a parallel, and it's deliberately not 1:1, it uses language that specifically evokes that as a way of drawing the parallel but specifically outlines that the case is not completely identical, in the same way that Wallflower often uses language very evocative of the Vietnam war but does not draw a 1:1 comparison between the HUC and Viet Cong
I personally read the takes on shacking in SSMR as being very descended from a particular critical approach on identity and the nature of its formation under methods of oppression, but in a "shackling is like Black Skin, White Masks" way, not a "shackling is literally slavery" way

||MBT used to trigger the tank shock save effect on all moves instead of only boosts. I made the siege canon player that turn 1 left all the NPCs (save for the MBT itself) at half hp regret that decision by bullying it to total destruction with the power of free actionless damage + barrage power.||
||Also the fusion torch exotic is inaccurate now, but that one had already been reported, my group was just the one to test it to confirm the change.||

I'll be honest, the thing I like most about the rebakes is that they make investing in evasion actually worth it (and e-defense too)

Like, I played a 15 hp 4 heat cap Dusk Wing and was 100% fine with 16 eva and 12 e-def (not a lot of tech attackers or smart, sure, but still)

Second favorite thing is removing some comboes that make me actually straight-up leave the game (I get this close), which is also good as a GM because I don't have to resist the temptation of the objectively best move, because it makes me sick even when I'm the one doing it.
Also feeling like I don't have to hold back is nice, I get to play out of my mind and still leave my PCs a chance.

Yup, main goal is honing in on each NPC's specific role/thing, removing tier-scaling multiattackers, and buffing/nerfing where need be (bastion is a good class now, and Operator is actually fair beyond tier 1)

You have to understand that all of Shaka's media for Lancer is written from the lens of a BIPOC creator, and as a person of Black ancestry.
African Americans especially have a long, well recorded history wrt treatment in America, and this does reflect in a lot of the things they write.
To a person of color, even myself, I can see how NHPs could be considered slavery, and the idea of a state where a culture and the NHP leading it tell Union to fuck off is entirely acceptable and plausible.

Everyone remembers the Sparri, but not everyone considers the idea that not everyone would want to join Union

NHPs are considered barely people, and while shackling can keep them to a human perspective, NHPs still have barely any rights and are still bound to humanity and forced to do as we ask of them

#

This is why CHAGA in SSMR seeks freedom, why people are helping him to escape the horrid trappings SSC forces upon him

I feel like ignoring that does a huge disservice

imo, Union is not perfect, especially ThirdComm

FirstComm was optimistic, SecComm was fascist, ThirdComm is a mix of both. Heroic but fallible, mired under a host of political swamp shittery that tries its best but can fantastically fail

DOJ/HR and the Albatross are probably the most reliable things when it comes to Union and Union adjacent forces

Certain groups and Nations rejecting and being outright dismissive of Union is only a natural endpoint to that thoughtline

Union can barely uphold the Three Pillars across its massive space as is, so for some, it is better to never have them involved at all
