Long ago, during the early days of Grimnir, a clan sought to fight the Yoten they thought would inevitably come to Grimnir. In doing so, they committed a dark art, in the name of a greater good. They fused their essence with remnants of the Yoten's blood, taking on serpent-like traits in doing so. This clan, who was viewed with suspicion by the other clans, fled into the mountains and existed over the centuries as Watchers of Grimnir, protecting the land from the shadows. However, over time, the clan shrank from attrition and generally being unable to consistently grow, until only one remained. This one orphan made friends with the Ravens who oft made roost near the hidden clan's home, and from the training he was given back when his parents still lived, as well as dark alchemical arts of the Clan, he sought to wait for the Yotens, even if it meant dying old and alone. Until one day, when the ravens spoke to him of the return of the Yoten, and heroes who had risen to stop them. And so this Hunter set off, into the wider world, to fulfil his destiny.

This character is part of a traveling circus that another players character is also in, not a lifelong occupation but also not a recent one, probably been going at it about a decade

one of a few occupations she's had as part of being an adventurer

She's originally from the Sublime Shogunate of the Ushinawa Isles (an expat fleet of a particular samurai and his retainers who were sick of mainland Tian Xia politics) in the Shackles, an archipelago off the west coast of the continent of Garund that's mainly ruled by various pirate clans

She eventually left for reasons I haven't figured yet and traveled west of the Shackles to Tian Xia, where she learned more about and plied her trade as an exorcist before once again leaving and travelling via the Crown of the World (a set of trade routes via her world's version of the arctic circle) to Avistan, traveling east until eventually reaching the Broken Lands where, as payment for a debt of saving a noble, the noble offered to train her in their culture's style of swordsmanship if she swore its pact and took on its name, Aldori

She's also a duskwalker, which are basically semi-reincarnating mortals who serve the cycle of life and death

So the pathfinder thing my gm is running (semi-west marches) is allowing up to three characters, so as the most experienced player I'm taking up the cause of doing that

1st is Darchahk, my Hobgoblin Mastermind Rogue that's archetyping into Alchemist. He's a former member of the Ironfang Legion, a formerly mercenary army now standing as the military of the new hobgoblin nation of Oprak after it was carved out of central Avistan in the Ironfang Invasion eight years in narrative past. He is part of an initiative on Oprak's part to foster relations between the nation and the Pathfinder Society, while also using the Society's globetrotting mandate to spy and report back to his superiors.

2nd is Aldori Arranouka, my previously mentioned Tengu Thaumaturge. The old woman of the group (pending other, older characters) who's already travelled quite a lot. Born in the archipelago of the Shackles, she was banished due to her father's crimes and ended up a fence and information broker in Tian Xia. One of her prized possessions, a sword she kept conspicuously on her person, is an Aldori Dueling Sword plundered by her father in a raid. News of this reached another Aldori who dueled her, ostensibly to repay the insult of the sword being taken. However, when she was defeated the man instead offered to train her if she renounced all her old ties and took up the style's name. She agreed, and is now signing on with the Society mostly out of boredom, but also a desire to investigate her duskwalker heritage.

3rd is Ouslandri, my Athamaru Druid and distant grand-descendant of the Shadow in the Sea, Lord Dagon. He won't be introduced to the party immediately but has interesting familial ties to two other characters, a pair of azarketi kineticists who are eventually going to cultivate the power of their fiendish forefather. He will be motivated to be their guide and show them the power they can wield over storm, sea, and shadow alike.

What’s the character?

Lucia Reyes (formerly Lucia Rekno), the daughter of the Lakan of Virbanwa (basically she's the emperor's daughter).

She was born into an extremely religious and capitalist society and stolen from her mother, one of the lakan's concubine, along with many other children to be molded into the perfect warrior general for the lakanate. This involved brutal training, magicks, and alchemy to turn her into basically a superhuman warrior. She was the only success out of the ten children used in the project. She participated in a bunch of campaigns and developed a martial art leveraging her ridiculous strength, leading to her title as "Closed Hand of God". She eventually became the new Mahasenapati, or "Grand Warlord", placing her as one of three people leading the whole of Virbanwa's conquest. However, she was given a second in command named Iris Reyes, also known as the Indigo Thunderbolt due to her incredible skill as an army witch. The two began a secret relationship, forbidden by both faith and their stations. It was the first time she got to experience any amount of humanity. This unfortunately also gave her something to finally lose. When she learned of the coming Reconquista of the Pale Kings, she failed to convince her father of the threat and disobeyed him by deploying a fleet of ships to the west Sword Isles to capture powerful artifacts of an ancient war Lucia believed could give them a chance against the invasion.

Thats how she ended up in conclict with the party, and since then got her ass handed to her and now is in active rebellion against the lakanate. The figure behind her in the art is a representation of the Asura beginning to manifest within her soul as a result of her actions and slow loss of humanity.

Also the party has never seen her face since she almost always is in armor, and they have suspected that the lakanate wanted her to hide her face

Given the Royalty aspect of them

I was gonna recommend human personally, just as contrast to that asura. If the asura is the representation that she’s losing her humanity, I think it would be better served by her being visibly human under the armor

her next appearance in the plot is going to play into the fact that they've never seen her face

because things did not go well for her rebellion, she thinks Iris is dead, the asura manifested again, and now she's in a foreign place without any of her memories and her armor gone

was going to introduce a "new" character when they arrive in Gatusan named "The Blind Lion" who's going to be very nice and supportive of their cause, only for me to hint at her true identity that not even she knows about.

"The Blind Lion" title will come from the fact that she'll hide the one giveaway about her lineage, azure blue eyes, behind a blindfold

Their story ends with Tamamizu running away on the night before her beloved's wedding to the Emperor, whose hand she helped win by finding the most beautiful maple leaf in Japan, but that is not reflected in these characters' relationship since they are married to one another

Mizu is there not for her revenge quest, but for her interest in swords and sword techniques as well as her being termed a monster due to the circumstances of her birth

Johnny Silverhand is there for some of Inamizu's attitude towards authority, but also because the current dynamic between these two is somewhat similar to 'if Johnny and V Got Married About It' after becoming close friends in the best path for the two of them

Aloy and Ciri are in Tamara's for somewhat similar reasons, both are known for getting into 'good trouble'. Aloy does this via searching for knowledge while being somewhat cavalier regarding taboos, and Ciri does this by learning to defend herself, learn about and hunt monsters, and telling her nobleman father to fuck off

And also finding another parental figure in their past, though the other parental figure is the Mother Gothel to her Rapunzel, and sadly not the Geralt to her Ciri

you just make up a little story and then you hang that meat on the mechanical skeleton

or you make a pile of meat and then you stuff the skeleton in there as i mostly did for Bloody Hand

and then? oh baby. its time to start giving them charm points

Charm Points are a good place to start, little actions or traits that make the character interesting/amusing/cute to you, that you can readily have them do as the building blocks of whatever deeper personality you feel like giving them

Roleplay is a bit improv yeah, so its important to have a few hard points you can fall back on and use as jumping off points

Bloody Hand is An Elric so her charm points are that she's broody and moody, often depressive. She's a Princely looking girl, so when I describe her i can always lean on the language of gallantry to make her seem like she belongs in the narrative

But again, she's An Elric so the flipside of her is spite and greed and cowardice all being dragged behind the fact she has The Sword That Ends The World in her hands and it begs to be used

She doesn't know what she wants now that she has all the power she never got among the Living, and is mostly content to chase her whims unless someone is Forcing Her to Do Shit

or she's succumbed to the whispers in her blade and is hunting strong martial artists because. exalted.

anyway. the big point is, you don't need to Know Everything about a character you want to play

You need to know enough that you can fake Knowing Everything

Joined up with the rebellious military faction in her game (a Martian Republic revolting against a corporatist Earth) in the interest of finally having a route to revenge for her lost kin and "parents" (dead researchers who raised her). Wound up getting enmeshed with a squad of misfits under a Char clone-type character and actually learning to move beyond her vengefulness, while getting better and better as a swordswoman and MS pilot.

Wolf man, egotistical and brash, thinks they’re the strongest there ever was and quick to anger when that’s questioned

That said, if anyone has thematic name suggestions for a character with milk and blood symbolism (Songbirds psychic powers are associated with milk imagery for whatever reason and the character is also a user of Gore Arts aka blood magic), hit me up because I have been wrestling with this for days. It doesn't have to be a name that's actually a Name™️ you'd give someone in real life if that makes sense. Just something for the character to be called. It's their war name, because they've shed the name they had in life.

Time to post my Destiny characters' lore;

Ashla-5, my Hunter and my sole character continued from D1. She's my canonical 'Guardian' for the entirety of D1 and a lot of D2. Her Ghost, Butch, revived her in the Cosmodrome. She underwent gender transition during the Age of Triumph and was extremely close with Cayde-6 as mentor and mentee. Even though Forsaken's ending fades to black, she is definitely the one who shot and killed Uldren Sov with Cayde's cannon, wearing Cayde's cloak. She did not take Crow's existence well initially, but with the help of her fireteam she eventually grew to like 'the kid', and supports his being Hunter Vanguard post-Final Shape. Your classic Hunter who prefers revolvers, knives, longer-ranged rifles, and shotguns. Her preferred powers are those of the Gunslinger and Nightstalker, dependent on mood and operational need, though she defaults to Gunslinger.

Phoebe O'Ren, my Warlock who was revived in the Isles during the Age of Triumph by her Ghost Cetus from pre-Golden Age remains. Acting fireteam leader for Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and Lightfall. As can be implied by these things she has a fascination with the Darkness and the Hive and Taken that ostracized her from even other Warlocks, no strangers to reckless investigation and knowledge-seeking themselves. Has taken a shine to Savathun, one that is pretty flirty. She regularly explores the limits of the powers granted to the Guardians by the Darkness, and particularly enjoys the feeling of using Stasis. Uses every power available to her relatively equally, but prefers those of the Dawnblade, Stormcaller, and Shadebinder to those of the Voidwalker and Broodweaver.

Sana Zehl, my Titan who was revived after the Red War by her Ghost Juno, and is thus my youngest Guardian. As an Awoken intrigued by her people's culture, she spearheaded her fireteam's explorations of the Dreaming City, and was operational leader for Last Wish. Is also a cultural liaison to the Eliksni of the Last City given her and Misraaks' semi-shared cultural base and her passion for peace. Is the wariest among my fireteam of the Guardians' adoption of the Darkness for power and thus uses Stasis and Strand very irregularly. Her fears have been assuaged on that front in recent times, thanks to many revelations such as the Witch Queen's status as a Guardian. Also respects and is respected by the Cabal thanks to her willingness to fight for peace. Needles Zavala constantly about the fact that Caiatl is obviously flirting with him, and hopes that post-Final Shape the man learns to see the golden-armored elephant in the room that refuses to stop staring at him with bedroom eyes. (She is also maybe a liiiiiiittle jealous those eyes aren't for her)

so in Sunday night’s game she growled like an angry animal at the avatar of the goddess she used to worship. also derisively called something said avatar did a “cool parlor trick”

both times Clay has personally met the avatar of a goddess now, she reacted with naked disdain

(different goddess the first time. that one wound up as the party's patron and is now a personal friend of Clay's actually. but it took several out-of-universe years, and at least one in-universe year, of them knowing each other for Clay to trust and like Apospia)

but yeah Clay came face-to-...er... face with an avatar of Leira, goddess of lies and masks
after having had nightmares involving Leiran imagery for several in-game weeks, because it turns out being raised as a worshiper of the goddess of deception does not necessarily do great things for your emotional wellbeing

Clay is the type of person who wants to be liked and accepted and needed. before being an acolyte she was a street urchin so she's not used to not being lonely

she left Leiranism in large part because she hated lying to the people she'd come to view as her friends, i.e., the rest of the party, and in fact goes by Clay rather than Grimhild around them because she initially wanted to create a sense of emotional distance that really did not work

actually by this point she's become the heart (and, to an extent, unofficial leader) of the party lmao

she's the most emotionally intelligent because, well, being good with people's feelings is useful as a con artist

as for how Clay meeting Leira’s avatar came about, it was due to thus-far-vague plot stuff involving some manner of great change requiring the deities to have mortal agents, it would seem

which Clay is not down for. Clay is very uninterested in working for Leira in any capacity

due to reasons I won't get into here bc they're their own can of worms, Clay does believe that Leira has directly saved her from dying at least once, but Clay regards it as a matter of her own usefulness to Leira and absolutely didn't believe Leira when she said she hoped they could become friends

the most charitable version of Leira's attitude towards Clay that Clay currently thinks makes sense is "sometimes you get attached to a favorite tool"

What sort of development are you seeking?

For example: If you want to develop a richer backstory, I tend to find an aspect of the existing world's lore and ingratiate the character in it. It helps to not only inform their behaviors in alignment or defiance to the group's methodologies, but also provides the GM with people to interact with and parts of their past to come up and develop.

Post-Apocalyptic Courier with anxiety and biomancy unwilling thrust into the struggle for Godhood, as they grow more confident in themselves

Okay, so I'd like some assistance with Theming, because I have the very basic nuts and bolts of the character, but not really how it ll plays out.

Elanthruc Ne'erdevar, self-described Bastard is stuck doing the universe's dirty work just because they happened to kill a stranger wielding a magic gun who upon dying, turned to sand before them. It was said a thousand years ago that seven families the sacred duty to cull the particularly wicked from the world, but that number has dwindled to three, as the slayer of a Freelancer adopts their mantle. Now Rook, as they prefer to be called gets visions of people to hunt down and put out of their misery and they, resigned to following this fate, performs wetworks for the cosmos.

A bit of a glimpse into a grimy and disreputable sort of mercenary who is one of the Icons of this campaign. They were an archer their entire life and still manifest a bow of some sort as well as nearly a dozen small arms designed to dispatch various enemies, from hatchet to hammer, stilletto, and the trusty bollock knife. They are eminently pragmatic and hedonistic for they are doomed to die and return to dust as is the nature of their fate.

Color scheme is grey, scarlet, and forest green... So the part I'm having trouble with is representing the magical part of a Freelancer, who channels their will into a ranged attack, a very cowboy sort of vibe. Because I am a contrarian, of course gotta have the short range longbow, but the difficulty is how it manifests. Happily considering suggestions.

I am also the GM, so if there's particular lore behind anything in particular that could inform the decision, I can either develop it or consider it, but I'm having a real hard time depicting their Station in combat.
