oh anyway not to necro this but i def agree and i honestly think that part of the reason i've been thinking about this is because i've had to expand on what I think Argo's family dynamics are for my game (spoiler alert: equally fucked, I have the Laurents on maximum levels of succession as based on the approval of the current leadership, which has produced massive amounts of pressure for most of their heir candidates, like Argo, to both undermine each other and do really over the top things for that approval) and tbh, kind of produced a similar sympathetic impulse that I hadn't realized was missing before

kind of juxtaposed with i think they probably have a complex about the fact that like. the Laurents have been important since the melee they're as old power as it gets which I think makes for impossible levels of expectations compared to peers

• The Cyan Paradise, real name Duke Cahya-Beringin, ae/it/they. Ae is an Ispahsalari prospective noble heir who's also a very offputting individual with an affinity for the paracausal. Ae pilots a Calendula, and is bonded with the Magus.
• The Mulberry Bower, real name Duke Cahya-Biringan, ve/they. Ve is Cyan's sibling and is also a prospective heir, though ve's really not particularly ambitious about it. Ve is also kinda sponsored by SSC in that ve's an Oleander pilot ||who was handpicked by an SSC higher-up and is being closely watched by them. Ve would really rather be somewhere else, but ve has basically given up on it||. Ve has a typically cheerful demeanor. Ve is bonded with the Harlequin.
• Balor Florencia (she/her). The only ignoble member of the team. She's an unnaturally lucky gambler from Bo with a confident attitude. She also has some minor but high-quality dragon/dragonfruit themed biomods that she probably spent more than half of her winnings on. She's a Graveborn squire and is sponsored by that company, though she definitely doesn't fit the stereotype. Still a very talented pilot, though. Pilots a Störtebeker, and is bonded with the Fool.
• Lady Carrion-Sionnach (she/her), an Eyaleti noble heir. She seems cold and reserved but she's actually scarily competitive and ambitious. Pilots an Emperor, and is bonded with the Knave.
• Lady Candide-Optimé, she/her, a noble Begi eccentric. She's kind of a chuunibyou who wants to join the Stygos Grammaton but can't make the commitment. ||At least, for now. A certain augur foresaw that she will one day be one of them, and she got her hands on a tiny sample of the Blue Blood through an (")accident(") as something of a catalyst. She now considers piloting a religious experience||. Pilots a Hecatoncheires, and is bonded with the Celebrant.
• Alexander-Abhi, he/him, a timid Arrudyen young man and exceedingly minor noble from House Alexander. He's almost comically short and he's a tech prodigy with revolutionary ideals. His family hates him and he doesn't really even have a title. This may be because he's an illegitimate child with ignoble blood. Oh yeah and he's in the Crimson Memory because his family forced him to LMAO. Pilots a Gorgon, and is bonded with the Firebrand.

The Baron - Baronet Meddő Szénbánya of the House of Remembrance, Sole Bearer of the Line of Soot: A soft spoken and frail noble from an exceedingly obscure and isolated minor house which has been more or less cut off from galactic politics for the last 400 years, engaging only to pay taxes and trade with Voladores. Managed to con their way into the KCC despite having no political power, no combat experience, and no manna. May or may not have killed his father, who's to say? Due to an obscure language and a shitty translator, his name is almost always transliterated into "Baron Coalmine"

Monty - Daniel Montana: A member of the Union Science Bureau Dept. C: Union Scientific Barony Collaboration Initiative (USB-C: USBC(I)), Monty is a red blooded union man and NHP specialist. He's at the college on an exchange program purely because the paracausal monolith entity (which may or may not be an egregorian relic) living in his head told him to. He fundamentally does not understand the rules of Karrakin society, and has repeatedly tried to pay for any damages the party caused to Argo and Praya's mechs during Combat 1, much to their displeasure.

Fat Mac - Apollo McAllister: A House of Order ignoble who runs a troubled repair shop on Throne Karrakis. He has a deep hatred of Harrison Armory, but also harbors sympathies for "those fine folk on Sanjak." His Everest is a true frankenmech which, among other things, has managed to integrate a Barbarossa leg into the design, somehow. He has been brought into the KCC as a retainer for Baron, and is very adept at sticking his foot into his mouth when dealing with nobility. Fat Mac also has the dubious honor of being Praya's rival, as he has broken her wrist and ribs with a pipewrench and bisected her mech with a TCB crit that did 36 damage.

• Tried their best to comfort Elsa || after she was very distraught after losing the combat exercise against us- her mom dropped in, stole my PC away, and went "hey you did a good job humbling my daughter in that battle, here's $100" (a favor within reason, so long as it aids their studies). ||

• Ate shit and did extremely poorly in the High Passacaglian Archiecture class (reader's note: my silly little guy is a Neo-Passacaglian).

• Reassured another PC that Laurent was, in fact, not hitting on her and was just being courteous in the Seven Dances class (he was hitting on her).

• Acquired a Daisy Cutter after letting Kay infodump to hell and back about the technical side of mechs.

• Got ribbed mercilessly by PCs and NPCs alike about how they and Kiriona should just get around to dating already.

But [one] shared dance in the Seven Dances class was enough to make him more of a sympathetic figure in her eyes- or at least not a total bastard. We'll see how it goes. ||

second session (technically third if we count combat session 1.5) and our ungrateful plant (Melchiorre) is actually has a lot more going than i originally realized, now that i've gotten his backstory. He was part of a refugee group heading to petition Centcomm on Cradle, but his blockade runner got shot down and he was the only survivor. After hiding on Khayradin for a while he was, actually, adopted by a sympathetic high ranking Smoke noble and is legitimately his heir. Excited to see where that one goes.

Melchiorre put on one hell of a show walking straight onto the control point and then spending the rest of the session dipping and diving while Praya and Argo were swinging at him. Players swept without much structure or stress loss but most of them are at 1d6+4 overcharge now which is going to be interesting later.

He had gone to a pankrati bar and staked a bunch of money on his own duel, he didn't get a lot of takers but I said he got enough to buy a reserve off the table. I gave him his choice of the typical repairs, core bat, etc from the core book but because he impressed the staff at the Pankrati supply depot they offered him a "prototype reactor booster" in the form of the enhanced combat reserve that lets you take a second turn and then immediately explode, because I knew his player would think that was hilarious, and he did. The Stablemaster's people made him sign a liability waiver before that got installed.

Meanwhile, we did classes, the table there was a ton of fun but the free company pilot (Alpasan) also decided to take a traditional Karrakin cooking class. The PCs had been joking about ancient chinese poisions they found on a wikipedia dive so I had the professor also joke about how there are references to "cold food powder" during the melee but, like the ancient Earth historians, they still don't know what it was. Curd left class that day to see Argo behind him furiously taking notes. The party is convinced that Argo is trying to figure out how to make that poison and they need to steal his notebook before he poisons their food, Argo of course already knows how to make it and just genuinely wanted to learn how to cook.

The Harrison Legionnaire (Angelie), meanwhile, decided she wanted to TA for Standard Adversary Chassis after hearing the "Sherman" mentioned in the class description. The professor, one Mr. Lord Hesketh VIII, gratefully accepted her assistance and hopes for a productive working relationship.

At the duel watch party after class, Melchiorre then forced me to invent a gambling minigame on the spot and cleaned out Vivian, Valentine, and Rawan at Kapkat (before reverse-pickpocketing all the money to Rawan), while the law student (Curd) got into a political debate with Tomas, Angelie and Alpasan convinced Aloysius and Kay that they should ||find a Hecatoncheires and test it||, and the pankrati champion (Jimmy Toyota Buffet, his parents named him after the greatest underappreciated musician in the Massif Vaults and the best vehicle company on old Earth) infodumped about pre-Cradle yacht rock to anyone who would listen

Excellent session and I would once again like to note my appreciation for the excellent GM guidelines for the narrative beats, that was something i struggled with a lot as a new GM running some other modules and the material in the SOTW book has been incredibly helpful

• They are planning on using their favor to help organize a well and true celebration.

• Effendi is going to pitch it on the grounds that it'd further cohesion between combat teams, aid their practical knowledge of noble arts syllabus (calling to attention that they'd help organize a demonstration of the Seven Dances, a class other characters struggle in; it'd offer some practical experience politicking; etc.), thus holding the student body to a generally higher standard.

||I think there's an argument to be made either way. Tan camo feels more "realistic" which is I guess what you're going for when you're running combats against adversary chassis. OTOH these frames probably have to be handled carefully since they're filled with K-PG viruses so marking them as BUC property is helpful for security purposes||

well, read as written, Lock/Hold javelins work the same way. I don't know if there's a way for NPCs to force the fall to happen mid-turn (aside from Electrified Bola, which doesn't do falling damage). I'm not sure why you'd need that though, either way Hail of Fire forces them to fall

So I'm running the 4-player version and I went with a general college rule of pilots in the school being assigned to squads of 4 to keep the party together (the players, one for the twins, elsa and Kiriona, one for Hedros, Rawan, Tomas and Kay and one for Praya, Argo, Aloysius and a 4th person)

the 4th person I went with was Dame Edessa-Kass (name pulled from the student random rolls), callsign "Shard", who I wrote as being from a smaller noble house within the House of Stone, who had agreed to operate as Praya's retainer in a bid for status

in terms of personality, she's like the less significant mean girl orbiting around someone who's a lot more influential like a satellite. She's the type to back up everything praya says and will try to jump in and be protective at times despite being a lot less dangerous. I also kinda played her up as having a weird little crush on Praya kind of.

I could probably write up something similar for the other students present, though I do also think there's some comedy gold in Argo just calling up a pair of adult House of Sand Kavaliers for his shitty little school dueling match. Imagine showing up to a high school softball game and some rich kid has hired a pair of 6'4" adult men to back up his team, and the school is just allowing this somehow.

its funny really, the dustgrave token pack was 41 frames and it took me 3 months with the end results looking like this

i made like 1.5 times the amount of tokens in near the same amount of time, completely discounting me taking several weeks of breaks inbetween, and all of them at a vastly higher quality level

Finally was able to run the [Cadenze de l' Pavilios](#1335142849754169447 message) and hooo boy was it something.
Some highlights -

• Mac, the ignoble mechanic, was a hairs-breadth away from causing an international incident after the HA Ambassador dared imply that he'd be better off in the Purview.
• Mac got challenged to a rematch by the Stonelord at Prayas behest in order to reclaim the sword he won off of her back in Beat 2.
• Baron managed to crack Argo's facade by calling the Stonelord a hotty thotty.
• Mac screwed up his entrance to the dance floor and ripped off his everest's leg
• The mech-scale dance had Baron's ancient Sargamatha breakdancing while he and Monty repaired Mac's leg mid-dance.
• The rematch duel between Mac and Praya started out as an elegant sword fight but ended up as a slugging match after Baron and Mac baited her into a rage. With the success/failure clocks both at 5 out of 6, Mac managed to knock Praya unconscious with a vicious headbutt and humiliated her in front of her dad, many, many nobles, and the fucking Prime Baroness
• || When the Twins passed along the Blackmail reserve, I let them choose who they could blackmail. Naturally, they chose Eligos, so now I gotta figure that shit out ||

• Dame Edessa-Kas, retainer of the House of Stone who has a weird crush on Praya. Basically exists to fill the role of that one Hornet pilot in combat 1
• One who I haven't named yet, but the concept that's forming in my brain here is that she's a harrison Armory exchange student who maybe has some weird magus-bond esque paracausal stuff going on. Kind of exists to ||act as a red herring instead of Rawan after combat 4 if the party doesn't think the ungratefuls did it||. A bit isolated from the political realities of the purview, and a passionate engineering nerd.
• Lady Terese LaFleur, a girl who fills an archetype that I think SOTW's cast was tragically missing in the form of a pathetic failgirl. Nepo baby who only managed to become the college's social media intern despite being related to the current council representative of the House of Order. Wants to follow the rules, but is very easily pressured into doing things like giving people extra keycard access

our Pilot who's family is actually mostly still on the purview side of the border/are ex purview? well she really wants her parents and siblings to have a better deal in the orbitals, and while she and her siblings are homunculi and thus not even citoyen "born" to karrakinized parents in karrakin territory, the parents are very much still ultimately immigrants and so not privy to the free exploration of certain areas of the throne and she'd like them to be able to visit and have a better time at the college specifically since her birthday is coming up.

and she's spent weeks trying tyo get her aunt to Karrakis and the college to visit, which is much harder, because even though her aunt is basically a second mother to her for all the effort and love she's given and her aunt is foundational to who she is as a woman? Her aunt is a purview provisional subject and is not Karrakin she'd been on the other end of the border, during that war, and though the war is over, tensions are hot in 5016 and they can't imagine why a politicvally unimportant Purview subject should be allowed to just visit critical karrakin infrastructure or the college like that.

so she asked the HA student, who has connections, if she could get her aunt to the college to visit her by her birthday, to get an easier time for her aunt, in general.

she also asked a second favor, asked about her first real love, a highschool girlfriend, the first she was honest with about her existence, in full, (gender, and the being a homunculus part)

They met in like high school equivalent or something, stayed together until they were 21, but they had to split. The girlfriend's family was kind of poor and the girlfriend was a bit of a petty criminal to help make ends meet, but wanted to be "legit" and wanted to help her family, and, well

so she joined the legion, and she knew she'd have to leave their homeworld, and our pilot, georgie, wish she could have gone with, but she had to stay home and work to support her own family

All that to say, they went on one last date, the day before Terry had to leave, said their goodbyes, and georgie hadn't heard from the girlfriend in 9 years. so she's asking the HA comissar if they can tell her anything about Terry at all.

Georgie's worst fear is that terry was deployed back to the homeworld and fought in the same civil war that georgie did, (the one where Georgie earned her reputation in the Federal Karrakin Army as "the Mad Mage of Grunenwald") she'd really rather like to know terry isn't dead, esp by her hand.

Terry was the first time Georgie decided to allow itself to be a woman, with framework of its okay if its for terry to give it the "permission" it needed to be a woman, but the story of how they met is its own tale
